/on-air/the-all-sport-breakfast/audio/darcy-waldegrave-basketball-nz-are-the-architects-of-their-own-humiliation/ /on-air/the-all-sport-breakfast/audio/darcy-waldegrave-basketball-nz-are-the-architects-of-their-own-humiliation/ Basketball New Zealand has punched itself in the face.   Broke its own nose, and is trying to tell us it walked into a door.   The barely believable antics of not only the week just gone, but the entire season, and if players I’ve spoken to are to be believed, the pre-season, leads me to think that they are the architects of their own humiliation.   The Indian Panthers were suspended this week after a series of stumbles which eventually lead to them falling over their own feet, leaving themselves prone on the court floor.   Yes, the Panthers has been a problem child, yes, they’ve failed to deliver on court, yes, they’ve treated their staff both on court and off with disdain bordering on exploitation, yes they’ve dragged a wonderful competition into the swamp with them, but no, the blame should not lie solely at their Air Jordaned feet.   Claims from the commission chair Tracey Garland that “careful due diligence” was applied before their inclusion in the league are difficult to swallow. I did some retrospective diligence. A quick skim of the internet around the history of the parties involved with the Panthers (yeah, I’m like an antivaxxer – I did my own research) points to clumsy management and financial chaos. More red flags than a wealthy, good looking hit on Tinder.  Sal's NBL, NZ Basketball, whoever holds ultimate responsibility for this circus needs to stand up and tell us who opened the door and let these 20 clowns jammed into a tiny car in.   They can finger point and obfuscate all they want. The Indian Panthers management are a fast talking, blame laying excuse factory, but if they weren’t in the league, this wouldn't have happened.   Fess up BBNZ, this is a monster you let in, own it.  Fri, 02 May 2025 20:30:35 Z The All Star Panel with Clay Wilson and Aidan McLaughlin: NZ Cricket's partnership with Major League Cricket, NRL, Auckland FC /on-air/the-all-sport-breakfast/audio/the-all-star-panel-with-clay-wilson-and-aidan-mclaughlin-nz-crickets-partnership-with-major-league-cricket-nrl-auckland-fc/ /on-air/the-all-sport-breakfast/audio/the-all-star-panel-with-clay-wilson-and-aidan-mclaughlin-nz-crickets-partnership-with-major-league-cricket-nrl-auckland-fc/ This week’s panel features 九一星空无限talk ZB Sports 九一星空无限 Director Clay Wilson and Freelance Sports Journalist Aidan McLaughlin.  On today's agenda:  New Zealand Cricket’s bold new move into the United States  The NRL confirms its 18th team  Can Auckland FC bring home the chocolates on Sunday?   LISTEN ABOVE  Sat, 26 Apr 2025 01:46:26 Z Jim Dolan: Australian Correspondent talks Super Rugby, NRL /on-air/the-all-sport-breakfast/audio/jim-dolan-australian-correspondent-talks-super-rugby-nrl/ /on-air/the-all-sport-breakfast/audio/jim-dolan-australian-correspondent-talks-super-rugby-nrl/ Our Australian Correspondent Jim Dolan gives us the latest from the wonderful wide world of Aussie sport. Last night that wasn't the case, as the Reds turned up in an ocular nightmare of strip, maroon, and dirty gold.    Besides almost confirming that the Blues title defence aspirations are essentially shredded, last night's exchange underlined to the competition two very important aspects of Super Rugby Pacific:  1. New Zealand teams are either struggling to travel to Australia, or home advantage in 2025 is more important than we thought.   2. If you tackle a player and lift them past the horizontal, you’ll take a skate. 10 minutes, or the rest of the match.   It is one of the stranger stats this year that NZ teams can’t roll Aussie sides over there. Yes, the sample size is limited due to the nature of the draw, but the former easy beats of the comp are no longer cannon fodder in their own backyard. Funny what happens when the talent pool is concentrated.   Does the same apply in reverse, now that Moana Pacifica are watering down the NZ based talent pool? Australia lost a team and went from five teams down to four, New Zealand essentially took the opposite route, increasing from five teams to six. It’s notable that the Blues, the Hurricanes, the Highlanders, and Moana Pacifica have only notched 3 wins apiece so far.    Coincidence or correlation?   On the tackle, Tele’a ran afoul of the law with his aggressive tip on Tim Ryan and was walked for 10, until closer examination upgraded him to red and that basically condemned the Blues to another defeat.    A touch unfair? Possibly, but as a I often tell my 14 year old daughter, control your own narrative. If you don't give someone the opportunity to wreck your day, they can’t. If you tackle someone, don't go through the horizontal, don’t give officials the means to walk you. Because they will.  Fri, 25 Apr 2025 20:41:29 Z John Kingi: NZMMNA Secretary on the NZ Netball Mixed Nationals 2025 /on-air/the-all-sport-breakfast/audio/john-kingi-nzmmna-secretary-on-the-nz-netball-mixed-nationals-2025/ /on-air/the-all-sport-breakfast/audio/john-kingi-nzmmna-secretary-on-the-nz-netball-mixed-nationals-2025/ Easter weekend sees the New Zealand Netball Mixed Nationals 2025, hosted in partnership with Christchurch Men's and Mixed Netball.   45 teams will battle it out over 4 action packed days to be crowned Mixed Nationals champions.   NZMMNA secretary John Kingi joined D'Arcy Waldegrave to preview the event featuring some of our best men and women athletes from around the country.   LISTEN ABOVE  Sat, 19 Apr 2025 02:13:58 Z Ed Cory Wright: Orienteering Commentator and Competitor on the New Zealand Orienteering Champs /on-air/the-all-sport-breakfast/audio/ed-cory-wright-orienteering-commentator-and-competitor-on-the-new-zealand-orienteering-champs/ /on-air/the-all-sport-breakfast/audio/ed-cory-wright-orienteering-commentator-and-competitor-on-the-new-zealand-orienteering-champs/ The New Zealand Orienteering Champs, also known as the Nationals, is the top orienteering event in NZ.   Competitors of all ages go for national titles in various categories. Good things take time.   Last weekend's Super Rugby Aupiki final between the Blues wāhine and Matatu was a great game to watch. It put an exclamation mark on what was a rollicking tournament. The match reflected the strides the women’s game has taken since the inception of Aupiki.  The crowd at Eden Park didn’t rock any foundations but the TV viewer numbers were impressive. 405,000 folk tuned in to watch the best female footballers in the country duke it out and match worthy of their eyeballs was rolled out.  On Thursday night, in atrocious conditions, the Blues laid waste to the Waratahs in the Women’s Super Rugby Champions Final. Again, bugger all in the way of people in the stands (the weather was toxic) and I have no TV numbers, but I’d hazard a guess they would be healthy figures for a Thursday night game that sneaked up on people. Still, it was on, and it was worth a look.   The women’s game is having a growth spurt, and this needs to be appreciated and fostered as the men’s game has essentially had a multi-generational head start.   The game is played differently to the men's version, not unlike the cricketing gender split. It’s not better, nor worse, just different. For those hell bent on direct comparison, I have nothing. A frozen and archaic mindset is not worth fighting against, these people can’t or won’t accept the turning wheels of time, good luck to them.   The top level of domestic women’s rugby is still in an embryonic stage, to judge it based on crowd numbers alone is manifestly unfair, not forgetting how few people turn up to the men’s Super Rugby exchanges on a regular basis.    With further investment the game will exponentially grow. Let’s not forget that New Zealand rugby’s money, regardless of where it comes from, is not just for the All Blacks. It is for the entire game from the grass roots up. NZR has a responsibility to uphold the development of the game across the board. It’s our national game, not just a platform for the men in black.   Water the dirt and flowers last for you.    Good things take time.   Fri, 18 Apr 2025 21:11:50 Z The All Star Panel with Michael Burgess and Jamie Wall: Burling splits from Emirates Team NZ, Super Rugby's growing viewership, Moana Pasifika /on-air/the-all-sport-breakfast/audio/the-all-star-panel-with-michael-burgess-and-jamie-wall-burling-splits-from-emirates-team-nz-super-rugbys-growing-viewership-moana-pasifika/ /on-air/the-all-sport-breakfast/audio/the-all-star-panel-with-michael-burgess-and-jamie-wall-burling-splits-from-emirates-team-nz-super-rugbys-growing-viewership-moana-pasifika/ The latest edition of 'The All-Star Panel' features NZ Herald Sports Journalist Michael Burgess and Rugby Writer Jamie Wall.  On this weekend's agenda: What's gone wrong with Burling and Dalton? /on-air/the-all-sport-breakfast/audio/darcy-waldegrave-possible-motivations-for-peter-burlings-split/ Burling and Dalton have split.   Team New Zealand has lost the services of their greatest skipper, the most successful America’s Cup helmsman and the positive face of the team.   Burling has yet to speak of the breakdown, Dalton has been quick to put his side of the story out into the ether – I’m sure in time we’ll hear Burling's view and from there we’ll draw our own conclusions. Let's not forget, there are three sides to every story: your side, their side, and somewhere in between lies the truth.   There are a few considerations to take into account around this divorce.     Sail GP. Burling is the CEO of the Black Foils. The series is the future of high profile, high speed, and high budget sailing. It is a global, regularly staged, easily understood and dynamic series. Burling hasn’t won it, but he’s held aloft the Auld Mug thrice. The pull between Coutts (Sail GP) and Dalton (America’s Cup) for the services of one of the biggest names in sailing may well have reached breaking point and Burling can see the untapped future of the former. The likelihood of either series being content with Burling straddling both events in 2027 is low if not non-existent.   In Sail GP, Burling is the boss, in America’s Cup he isn’t. He’s achieved everything in America’s Cup but has yet to stand atop the GP series.    I’d also think that the prospect of spending the next two years in a warehouse with Dalton doesn’t fill his heart with joy.   Burling can’t race for another America’s Cup team, he doesn’t fit the eligibility criteria, so he’s not being lured away in that sense, but the prospect of an advisory role with a challenger with minimal time away from home and a fat paycheque is not out of the question.   Maybe Burling just can’t stomach the Cup’s absence from New Zealand any longer. He doesn’t want to be party to the face slap that is TNZ’s continued engagement with offshore defences.    And then there’s the most important campaign he has ever been involved in. One where the first few years is of utmost import to get right and fully engaged with. It’s a campaign that means more than any medal, any cup, any fiscal reward.   Pete Burling is a dad. I’d suggest that role is the most instrumental in his decision making.    You can’t get that time back. A man’s got to work, but at what cost?   The Sail GP commitment over America's Cup is a no brainer for me.    Being a dad is the most important role he’ll ever have.   Fri, 11 Apr 2025 20:38:03 Z The All Star Panel with Alex Powell and Paul Allison: America's Cup, Liam Lawson, Spain's bid to host the Rugby World Cup /on-air/the-all-sport-breakfast/audio/the-all-star-panel-with-alex-powell-and-paul-allison-americas-cup-liam-lawson-spains-bid-to-host-the-rugby-world-cup/ /on-air/the-all-sport-breakfast/audio/the-all-star-panel-with-alex-powell-and-paul-allison-americas-cup-liam-lawson-spains-bid-to-host-the-rugby-world-cup/ The latest edition of 'The All-Star Panel' features NZ Herald Online Sports Editor Alex Powell and Gold Sport Rugby Commentator Paul Allison.   On this weekend's agenda:  Liam Lawsons' big return to the Racing Bulls team  Have New Zealanders fallen out of love with the America's Cup?  Spain becomes the frontrunner to host the 2035 Rugby World Cup  LISTEN ABOVE  Fri, 04 Apr 2025 21:04:38 Z Jim Dolan: Australian Correspondent talks Dylan Walker, Australian Super Rugby teams, motorsport /on-air/the-all-sport-breakfast/audio/jim-dolan-australian-correspondent-talks-dylan-walker-australian-super-rugby-teams-motorsport/ /on-air/the-all-sport-breakfast/audio/jim-dolan-australian-correspondent-talks-dylan-walker-australian-super-rugby-teams-motorsport/  Our Australian Correspondent Jim Dolan gives us the latest from the wonderful wide world of Aussie sport. Sure, they’ve had some catastrophic results which have set the drums beating for his removal, but poor turnouts are to be expected in international cricket. Australia, India, and England are all capable of blowing a sandshoe sporadically, so it’s not a damning indictment of Stead’s stewardship when the team mount the sidewalk and collect 10 yards of picket fence and some shrubbery. To focus on the smudges during his command would be mealymouthed and small-minded.   Gary has held this team together during the biggest upheaval in world cricket since Kerry Packer threw a sabretooth amongst the pigeons back in the 70’s. The proliferation of T20 leagues and the money they offer has been a massive challenge for all boards, with NZ cricket, aided by a very fluent and pragmatic coach, navigating the choppy waters with aplomb.    He has also achieved across all three formats and may well be the last coach to do so.  To those who roll out the tired, predictable, and myopic line that his success is only due to him inheriting a great team built by Hesson and McCullum, I say this: Yes, he has had access to some of the greats who started under a different regime, but he has also been behind the launch of future greats and the continued development of the meat of the team.   Did he hold on to Southee too long? Did he treat Neil Wagner as well as he should have?    This is nitpicking to me. In the wider picture, the measured and calm Gary Stead has been behind some of the greatest times in New Zealand cricket history.   Whatever he chooses to do, I’ll be behind him %100,   Top coach, top man, great New Zealander.  Fri, 04 Apr 2025 19:26:57 Z The All Star Panel: Max Verstappen disagrees with Liam Lawson demotion /on-air/the-all-sport-breakfast/audio/the-all-star-panel-max-verstappen-disagrees-with-liam-lawson-demotion/ /on-air/the-all-sport-breakfast/audio/the-all-star-panel-max-verstappen-disagrees-with-liam-lawson-demotion/ Red Bull Racing advisor Helmut Marko has admitted Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen disagrees with their decision to demote teammate Liam Lawson. The kiwi F1 driver has experienced the full force of a truly global sport and not in an uplifting or life affirming manner.  His disconsolate face has been peppering sports pages worldwide as his fall from Formula 1 grace has been intensely documented over 2 short weeks. His start in the infamously difficult to drive Red Bull RB21 machine (and that’s saying something - none of us could get an average F1 car into gear and moving) has captured the top end of motorsport in a way that hasn’t been seen in some time.  His elevation to the #2 Red Bull seat as teammate to modern great and 4 times consecutive world champion Max Verstappen, was questioned at the time and has now come into full focus as his start has been catastrophic. He hasn’t died, but his results have been appalling.  Extenuating circumstances considered, this is hardly surprising, but the numbers have been considerably worse than most would have expected.  He knows this. RB management know this. They have acted quickly by inserting the hot and cold, temperamental Racing Bull driver Yuki Tsunoda into the seat. Engine manufacturer Honda are believed to have sweetened the deal to the tune of millions of dollars so their man can race in their home Grand Prix in Japan at Suzuka. Many have suggested that this rapid swinging of the axe shows immense panic, even by Red Bull standards, and is an unjust reaction after such a swift promotion which has come without providing Liam with the tools he needs to succeed - time in the seat before the season began. It’s a results driven business, but even in this rarified air, Red Bull’s knee jerk reaction is a surprise. With a disgruntled Max Verstappen and the departure of their peerless designer Adrian Newey among others, this is a team creaking under desperation of their own making, with Liam being a convenient and obvious fall guy. He’ll bounce back don't worry, but after the hijinks of late last season and the current chaos, I’m not sure Red Bull will at all. The energy drink empire is going flat. Like Icarus, they're flying too close to the sun and the wax holding together their wings is melting. No surprise there. They’ll take on New Caledonia on Monday for a ticket to FIFA’s quadrennial powerflex, where they’ll join a quarter of the globes football playing countries.  With the competition expanding to 48 teams, NZ ensures direct entry through Oceania success, with no intercontinental playoff malarkey to endure.   This alters the landscape somewhat.   Previously, All White qualification to the World Cup was hailed as a highlight of NZ’s sporting history. 1982 and 2010 are locked into our sporting pantheon, achievements that almost beggar belief for their remarkable and unlikely path through the maze of qualification. We all have stories around the impossible 1982 journey, the 2010 road which culminated in one of the biggest and loudest nights in Wellington’s history.   Entry to the biggest stage in world sport, which should occur on Monday night in Auckland, will not be met with such enthusiasm, celebration or astonishment. The once rocky and treacherous path has been realigned and tar sealed, complete with an open road speed limit.   This shouldn’t sully the destination, but it won’t be met with the joy and patriotic fervour of days gone by. The All Whites are doing what has been asked.   The qualification celebration goal posts have been moved. They are now group stage celebrations. The gauge of success, the real challenge, the true reflection of triumph at the World Cup is the group stage.   Getting through to the round of 32 becomes the new Holy Grail, only then will this team be spoken of in the same breath as the heroic 1982 and 2010 teams.    Fri, 21 Mar 2025 19:35:25 Z
