Donald Trump faced a storm of condemnation today after posting 鈥減erverse鈥 and 鈥渟ick鈥 remarks suggesting Rob Reiner and his wife Michele were murdered because of the celebrated filmmaker鈥檚 criticism of the United States President.

Among those shocked were some staunch Trump loyalists, and the remarks triggered a wave of unusually negative responses on his Truth Social network that he uses to communicate with his base.

As tributes for Reiner poured in, Trump launched a crude attack on the director of When Harry Met Sally, Stand By Me and other popular hits.

Trump claimed the Reiners had died 鈥渞eportedly due to the anger鈥 that Reiner had caused by criticising the Republican leader.

Trump also boasted of his own supposed political success, and said Reiner had 鈥渄riven people CRAZY by his raging obsession鈥 of attacking the President.

The comments came as police announced that Reiner鈥檚 son, Nick, had been arrested on suspicion of murder - a development that intensified the backlash.

鈥淚鈥檇 expect to hear something like this from a drunk guy at a bar, not the president of the United States,鈥 Nebraska Republican Don Bacon, who retires from the House of Representatives next year, told CNN.

Marjorie Taylor Greene, once one of Trump鈥檚 fiercest allies in Congress, scolded Trump over his response to a 鈥渇amily tragedy鈥 that was 鈥渘ot about politics or political enemies鈥.

鈥淢any families deal with a family member with drug addiction and mental health issues. It鈥檚 incredibly difficult and should be met with empathy especially when it ends in murder,鈥 she posted on X.

鈥業nappropriate and disrespectful鈥

Thomas Massie, another Trump critic on the Republican side of the House of Representatives, called the President鈥檚 comments 鈥渋nappropriate and disrespectful鈥 while New York moderate Mike Lawler called the remarks 鈥渨rong鈥.

Trump claimed the Reiners had died 鈥渞eportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.

鈥淗e was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness,鈥 the Republican leader wrote.

Trump has a long record of incendiary social media posts that have outraged Democrats, but open condemnation from within Republican ranks was once almost unthinkable.

Miles Taylor, a former Trump administration homeland security official who became a prominent internal critic after anonymously publishing a 2019 tell-all book, accused Trump of 鈥渕ocking the dead鈥 and branded him a 鈥渟ick creep鈥.

鈥淗is attacks on [Republican senator] John McCain after the veteran鈥檚 death pushed me to speak out from within his administration. [The] taunting of Rob Reiner鈥檚 murder makes me even more determined to defy Trump.鈥

Democrats also responded with fury. David Axelrod, the former chief strategist to President Barack Obama, described Trump鈥檚 post as 鈥減erverse鈥.

鈥淭he absence of empathy & grace for the Reiner family in their moment of profound loss and grief is sad and revealing. For @POTUS, his grievances trumps their grief.鈥

Democratic Senator Chris Murphy said Trump had 鈥渓ost it鈥.

鈥淣ow saying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own murder because they didn鈥檛 support him. So sick,鈥 he wrote.
