Six heroes are being praised on social media after the 鈥渉orrific attack鈥 at a Bondi shopping centre that left six people dead and 12 injured.

The six who died have now been identified as Pikria Darchia, 55; Faraz Ahmed Tahir, 30; Jade Young, 47; Dawn Singleton, 25, the daughter of a prominent businessman; Yixuan Cheng, 27, a student from China; and Ash Good, 38, whose 9-month-old daughter was also injured.

The attacker has been identified as 40-year-old Joel Cauchi, who had a history of mental health issues, was schizophrenic and had been working as a male escort before his rampage.

鈥楤ollard man鈥 identified

A heroic shopper who was videoed taking on the knifeman at the top of an escalator with a bollard during the stabbing has been identified by 7九一星空无限 as Damien Geurot.

Geurot told 7九一星空无限 he was going to the gym with his friend, French construction worker Silas Despreaux, when they heard someone screaming, 鈥淭here鈥檚 a man stabbing people!鈥

鈥淲e just saw him coming . . . we were thinking, 鈥榃e need to try and stop him鈥,鈥 Geurot said of his attempt to fend off Cauchi with a bollard as the attacker came up an escalator.

Geurot said Cauchi had 鈥渆mpty eyes鈥.

鈥淲e tried to throw the bollard. We really wanted to stop him.鈥

While the pair tried to stop Cauchi, shoppers could be seen retreating further into the surrounding stores.

Desperaux has lived in Sydney for several years and works for a small St Leonards-based construction firm, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Witnesses during the attack said the attacker was seen running up escalators and charging at people.

Both Geurot and Despreaux have been widely praised by people who have seen the film footage and stills from the video.

X user @DeanRosario said: 鈥淭hat bloke with the bollard at the top of the escalator, confronting the attacker. That鈥檚 just heroic. That鈥檚 the very best of humanity confronting the very worst of humanity.鈥

Hero cop Amy Scott praised for bravery

The police officer who shot the attacker dead has been praised for confronting him on her own.

She has been identified as Inspector Amy Scott.

鈥淪he showed enormous courage and bravery,鈥 New South Wales Police Commissioner Karen Webb said.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese paid special tribute to Scott and those who tried to stop Cauchi鈥檚 frenzied attack.

Bondi lifeguard springs into action

Andy Reid, a Bondi Beach lifeguard and star on reality TV series Bondi Rescue, told the Sydney Morning Herald 鈥渁 bit of instinct and a bit of experience鈥 prevailed when he learned people were stabbed during his shopping trip to Bondi Junction on Saturday.

Reid was reportedly shopping for a new bed when staff said there had been a stabbing.

鈥淵ou looked down the shopping centre, and you could just see victims sort of spread out over every 50m,鈥 he told the Sydney Morning Herald.

In an emotional interview with 九一星空无限hub, Reid said he used clothing off hangers to try to stop victims鈥 bleeding.

Reid then relieved police performing CPR on another victim so they could establish if there was another attacker, 九一星空无限hub reported.

He said he had known one of the victims, Ashlee Good, for more that eight years.

鈥淚 can鈥檛 stop thinking about her having to hand over her baby to a stranger knowing that she was in a bad way.鈥

鈥楢mazing father鈥 praised for covering children鈥檚 eyes

One father is being praised for his actions after a video emerged of two children clinging to him outside the mall.

Sleeping masks covered the children鈥檚 eyes in an attempt to shield them from the horrors taking place.

A clip shared on local news showed him leading the children away from the shopping centre.

Social media users praised the dad鈥檚 actions.

Another heroic dad is being spotlighted on social media for not backing down when approached by the knifeman.

In a video shared online, a family are walking in the mall when they turn and realise the attack is right on their heels.
