United States authorities are searching for an 鈥渁ggressive鈥 research monkey after it escaped following a truck accident.
On October 28 (US time), a vehicle carrying rhesus macaques from Tulane University overturned in Mississippi, freeing several into the surrounding area, Jasper County Sheriff鈥檚 Department warned.
鈥淭he monkeys are approximately 40lbs [18.1kg], they are aggressive to humans, and they require PPE [personal protective equipment] to handle,鈥 the department warned in a Facebook post.
鈥淭he monkeys carry hepatitis C, herpes, and Covid.鈥
The department warned local residents not to approach the monkeys as they 鈥減ose potential health threats鈥.
However, Tulane University clarified that the primates did not carry any infectious diseases.
鈥淣on-human primates at the Tulane National Biomedical Research Centre are provided to other research organisations to advance scientific discovery. The primates in question belong to another entity, and they have not been exposed to any infectious agent,鈥 Tulane University said in a statement.
The Sheriff鈥檚 Department responded with an update stating they had been advised by the truck driver that 鈥渢he monkeys were dangerous and posed a threat to humans鈥.
鈥淲e took the appropriate actions after being given that information from the person transporting the monkeys. He also stated that you had to wear PPE equipment to handle the monkeys.鈥
A further update said all but one of the escaped monkeys have been destroyed.
鈥淲e are continuing to look for the one monkey that is still on the loose.鈥
