An Argentinian man showed up to his own funeral, leaving mourners bewildered as to whose body they were burying.

The Daily Mail reported the 22-year-old, who has not been named, was on a multi-day bender in Alderetes when his family wrongly identified him as dead.

His mother approached local police after hearing a man had been hit and killed by a sugarcane truck on September 18, according to La Gaceta.

She identified the body as her missing son by his clothing and distinguishing features.

But the 22-year-old disrupted his funeral with a stunning declaration that left mourners confused - 鈥淚鈥檓 alive鈥.

He was taken to the local police station where he confessed to have been 鈥渋ndulging鈥 in a neighbouring town when the man died.

The body was eventually identified as 28-year-old Maximiliano Enrique Acosta, reported La Gaceta.

Acosta鈥檚 brother Hern谩n was left upset with how the local authorities had handled the death - particularly after they initially asked him to view the wrong body, prolonging his identification.

鈥淔irst, they handed over the body without proper identification. Then they made me go to the morgue twice. We shouldn鈥檛 have to go through this after everything we suffered.鈥

Acosta was finally buried in Delf铆n Gallo on September 23, where mourners described him as 鈥渓oved by everyone鈥.

The Argentine Public Prosecutor鈥檚 Office confirmed an investigation into the authorities鈥 internal practices has been opened.
