  • Fifteen innocent people have been confirmed dead and 42 injured in a terror attack at Sydney鈥檚 Bondi Beach on Sunday.
  • Two gunmen opened fire on Australians celebrating a Jewish Hanukkah festival, called Chanukah by the Sea.
  • The gunmen were Naveed Akram, 24, who is in hospital, and his 50-year-old father, Sajid Akram, who was shot dead by police.

A former Bay of Plenty resident living in Bondi Beach has described hearing gunshots and seeing people running through the streets as a massacre unfolded near his home.

Fifteen innocent people have been confirmed dead after two gunmen opened fire on Australians celebrating a Jewish Hanukkah festival at the Sydney beach yesterday evening.

Another 42 people were injured in the shooting, which has been declared an act of terror.

One gunman was killed and the other, his son, is in hospital.

Maydad Ronen, a boxer who previously lived in Rotorua, said he lives about a five-minute walk from the iconic beach.

Ronen said he had been training at a park where another festival was taking place, close to the beach where the Jewish Hanukkah festival, Chanukah by the Sea, was held.

鈥淭here were other areas in Sydney, in the eastern suburbs, where they were doing Hanukkah celebrations by the harbour, but this particular one was by the beach.鈥

Ronen, who is Jewish, told the Rotorua Daily Post he got home about 6.30pm.

The shooting began about 15 minutes later.

鈥淲hen I went home, I found out that this was all going on down Bondi, and I鈥檓 so glad I left the park because it was another [potential] target.鈥

Ronen said he heard gunshots and saw helicopters flying above.

鈥淚 walked out on the street, and had these people running through the streets. There was a lady with two kids, and she was just about crying.鈥

He said the woman had witnessed 鈥渢wo guys鈥 on the bridge by the beach opening fire.

鈥淚 said to her, this Italian lady, What鈥檚 wrong? I heard about the shooting. What鈥檚 going on with the helicopters flying above?鈥

Ronan watched the footage posted online and realised what had happened.

鈥淲e never expected this; it鈥檚 heartbreaking.鈥

Ronen said it was 鈥渞eally sad鈥 and terrible that a shooting of this nature had happened so close by.

鈥淏ondi is a beautiful place, we鈥檙e living in a beautiful country that has a diverse multicultural influx of different people from different religions, races, and backgrounds.

鈥淚t鈥檚 sad that we can鈥檛 exist together without stuff like this happening.鈥

鈥 鈥 It鈥檚 really sad that in our day and age, our children have to witness this.鈥

He said he had people ringing him from all over the world and he had received calls and text messages from Rotorua.

Ronen lived in Rotorua for five years before moving to Bondi in 2004, but said he returned frequently to his 鈥渉ome away from home鈥 to visit family.

He said he returned to Bondi two weeks ago after another trip to Rotorua, where he was formally inducted into the World Masters WBF Boxing Hall of Fame 鈥 a significant milestone in his boxing career.

Political leaders condemn shooting

Australia鈥檚 Prime Minister has condemned the mass shooting, with Israeli President Isaac Herzog labelling the gunmen 鈥渧ile terrorists鈥.

Armed police are standing guard at Jewish sites around New Zealand following the attack.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon issued a statement saying he had spoken with Jewish community leadership in New Zealand to reaffirm his 鈥渋ntolerance for anti-Semitism鈥.

鈥淟ast night鈥檚 horrific attack at Bondi Beach has been confirmed by Australian authorities as a terrorist attack targeting Jewish people.

鈥淗anukkah is a time of peace and joy, not of pain and grief. This vile act of hatred is something all New Zealanders condemn,鈥 Luxon said.

鈥淢y thoughts are with the Jewish community in Australia and with people of Jewish faith here in New Zealand and around the world.鈥

Luxon told RNZ there were no indications of New Zealanders being caught up in the attack.

鈥淥bviously, many of us know that area very well, having a lot of Kiwis in that area. We will be anxious about that and their relatives.鈥
