Men鈥檚 eighth seed Lorenzo Musetti has escaped disqualification from the French Open after accidentally kicking a ball into a line judge.

The Italian needed four sets to beat Frances Tiafoe and reach the semi-finals in Paris for the first time, but was lucky to advance after kicking a ball towards the wall, which hit a line judge in the shoulder.

The second set incident meant Musetti received a code violation warning for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Tiafoe was disappointed after the match, saying the lack of punishment was 鈥渃omical鈥 while Musetti said he was 鈥渟cared鈥 of potentially being thrown out of the tournament.

鈥淥bviously he did that and nothing happened,鈥 said Tiafoe.

鈥淚 think that鈥檚 comical, but it is what it is.

鈥淣othing happened, so there鈥檚 nothing really to talk about. Obviously it鈥檚 not consistent, so it is what it is.鈥

The incident had similarities to when Novak Djokovic was disqualified from the US Open in 2020 for mistakenly striking a line judge in the throat when he hit a ball towards the back of the court.

鈥淗onestly it was really unlucky coincidence,鈥 said Musetti.

鈥淚 was a little bit, honestly, scared, because I really didn鈥檛 want to harm nobody, of course.

鈥淚 immediately went to the line umpire, and I of course said sorry. I apologise to everyone.

鈥淚t was right to have a warning, but I think the umpire saw that there was no intention about that, and that鈥檚 why he probably just let me continue my game.鈥

Musetti will face defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the final four.
