The Australian-raised rising rugby star beating the odds

Arriving in Christchurch from Melbourne to study and chase his rugby dreams in 2024, Xavier Treacy was virtually unknown in New Zealand鈥檚 rugby world.

Fast forward 15 months and he鈥檚 represented his Kiwi parents鈥 country at the U20 level, something even he recognises as odds-defying.

鈥淭hat number would鈥檝e been paying in the hundreds,鈥 he said with a grin when asked about his chances.

It鈥檚 not out of the average person鈥檚 imagination to see how the New Zealand-born, Australian-raised 20-year-old has accomplished what he has.

Not every young rugby player emulates Richie McCaw by writing down their goals on a sheet of paper. Even less accomplish all of them.

鈥淚 just wrote down how I want to play Varsity Colts, then Varsity Premieres and I think I had Canterbury 19s, Crusaders 20s and NZ 20s there too,鈥 he said.

鈥淚 had those goals in the background, and I was pretty methodical of what I wanted to do. I鈥檇 cross one off and then look at the next one.鈥

Treacy said he was 鈥渁mazed鈥 by the support he鈥檚 received since coming to New Zealand to hit those goals, a refreshing take to hear amid a field of tall poppy syndrome.

鈥淚n Aussie, I found sometimes people would say things to you and it鈥檚 a little backhanded.

鈥淭he culture here is so supportive, and everyone wants to see you do well and see you grow. Maybe it鈥檚 not like that everywhere but I鈥檓 just in a lucky position to have that.鈥

The call to confirm that he鈥檇 be representing New Zealand was one Treacy will never forget, as it came with a wave of ecstasy and relief.

The lock/flanker thought he had missed the cut after mixing his dates up, so when the call came, he was caught by surprise and missed it entirely. After giving a ring back, there was only one thing on his mind.

鈥淲hen you get a call like that, I always get a bit emotional because I always think of my family back home. They鈥檙e the first people I want to call because they backed me and have helped me out with so much,鈥 he said.

鈥淚 think Mum shed a few tears 鈥 that feeling is what I chase.鈥

Those emotion levels went through the roof after putting the black jersey on for the first time, something Treacy understands to a tee.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a feeling you can鈥檛 really describe. You put it on, and it doesn鈥檛 matter what your headspace is before,鈥 he said.

鈥淭here鈥檚 just a switch, especially for me, in that I鈥檓 prepared to do anything.鈥

Dan O鈥橞rien has had front-row seats in Treacy鈥檚 journey, watching the young man develop as his club and Canterbury U19 head coach in addition to his assistant role with the Crusaders U20s.

鈥淗e鈥檚 just constantly wanting to learn,鈥 he said.

鈥淲hen you put a player like that in those higher-level environments, it鈥檚 all about learning quickly and applying it so he鈥檚 built perfectly for that.鈥

Coupled with a scintillating work rate and physicality, O鈥橞rien suggested 鈥渢he sky鈥檚 the limit鈥 for Treacy鈥檚 rugby future.

鈥淗e鈥檚 played NZ 20s, I鈥檇 say NPC is around the corner and from there he鈥檒l play Super Rugby,鈥 O鈥橞rien said.

鈥淥nce you play Super Rugby, the odds get shorter and shorter to wear the full black jersey鈥 I think we鈥檒l see him reach the highest levels of New Zealand rugby.鈥

Treacy himself, however, is laser-focused on two things.

鈥淢aking myself proud and my family proud bro, that鈥檚 the number one.鈥
