The Chiefs have confirmed that assistant coach Jono Gibbes will take charge of the Super Rugby Pacific franchise for the 2026 season, replacing Clayton McMillan, who is off to Irish club Leinster.
As speculated by the Herald in April, Gibbes will step up for the top job after two years as an assistant at the franchise, where he made 68 appearances between 2001-08.
The 48-year-old brings a wealth of coaching experience, having had roles with Leinster, Ulster, La Rochelle and Clermont. He was also coach of the New Zealand Under-20s team in 2023 and 2024.
Gibbes says he鈥檚 excited to step up as he looks to lead the Chiefs to a title, something they couldn鈥檛 manage under McMillan, who lost four finals in his five years at the helm.
鈥淏eing part of the organisation for the past two years has given me a real appreciation for what鈥檚 been built here and how this team has grown into a consistent, competitive unit,鈥 Gibbes said.
鈥淢y job now is to help maintain that consistency and keep pushing to unlock the full potential of this team. We have a strong foundation and a lot of talent, so I鈥檓 excited about what we can achieve.鈥
McMillan believes the Chiefs are in a safe pair of hands under Gibbes.
鈥淛ono brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and a strong connection to the region,鈥 McMillan said.
鈥淭he coaching, management and playing group has a lot of continuity and cohesion, which is a strong foundation to build from.
鈥淚 have no doubt this group will lead the Chiefs to great things and continue to excite and inspire our loyal supporters, stakeholders and wh膩nau.鈥
Last month, former Chiefs first five Stephen Donald appeared to let slip Gibbes was going to be appointed coach on Sky Sports鈥 The Breakdown.
With Gibbes鈥 appointment confirmed, it leaves the Crusaders as the only franchise who are yet to decide the future of their coach.
Rob Penney led them to the title this season, but with his contract up, he didn鈥檛 want to speculate on his future.
