Outside back Mererangi Paul has joined the Black Ferns squad ahead of the Women鈥檚 Rugby World Cup semifinal as an injury replacement for Amy du Plessis.
Du Plessis has been ruled out of the tournament with the shoulder injury she sustained in the side鈥檚 opening match against Spain.
鈥淲e鈥檙e all feeling for Amy as she leaves the squad, but she can be extremely proud of the contribution she鈥檚 made to our campaign, and we鈥檝e made sure she鈥檚 felt our support over the past 24 hours,鈥 said Black Ferns Director of Performance, Allan Bunting.
鈥淎t the same time, it鈥檚 a special moment for Mererangi and her wh膩nau for her to get the call and we will welcome her into the squad. She鈥檚 a talented Black Fern who has test match experience and covers the midfield. She will bring a lot to the environment.鈥
The Black Ferns face Canada in Saturday鈥檚 semifinal for a spot in the third straight World Cup final.
Since scoring two tries on debut against Australia in 2023, former professional netball player Paul has played 12 tests for the Black Ferns and in 2023 was a nominee for World Rugby Breakthrough Player of the Year.
One of seven siblings, she was raised in Whakat膩ne and initially played sevens before joining Counties Manukau and then being selected for the Chiefs Manawa in Super Rugby Aupiki in 2022.
