The 33-strong squad tasked with defending the Black Ferns鈥 title as Rugby World Cup champions has been selected.
Following the announcement of the Black Ferns XV squad earlier this month, there were few surprises in the World Cup squad named in Wellington this evening.
Veteran Kelly Brazier has earned a place in the squad as the second first five-eighths alongside co-captain Ruahei Demant. Brazier has only placed twice for the Black Ferns since 2021, but did enough to convince selectors they needed her in the squad for her fourth World Cup bid.
The same can be said for lock Laura Bayfield and tighthead prop Veisinia Mahutariki-Fakalelu, who have featured in just one test for the Black Ferns - but earned their places in the squad to take on the challenge of the World Cup.
A total of 14 in the squad will be featuring in their first World Cup, while there is a good mix of youth and experience with the likes of Portia Woodman-Wickliffe, Theresa Setefano and Stacey Waaka making their third appearances.
The omission that will likely be a point of conversation is outside back Ruby Tui. Tui has been on the outer of the Black Ferns in recent times, only featuring once off the bench for the side in the 2025 season.
She did impress playing against the side for the Black Ferns XVs and then again off the bench against the Wallaroos. However, the selection panel opted to take fellow World Cup winners Woodman-Wickliffe, Renee Holmes and Ayesha Leti-I鈥檌ga, and young stars Katelyn Vahaakolo and Braxton Sorensen-McGee as their outside back threats.
Veteran prop Krystal Murray was not named in the initial squad, but was instead included as a non-travelling reserve.
鈥淥n behalf of the coaching group, I鈥檇 like to congratulate all our players named tonight in front of their wh膩nau,鈥 Black Ferns director of Performance Allan Bunting said. 鈥淲e are really excited about this group and truly believe they can take us to the next level.鈥
鈥淲e鈥檝e got vast experience across our squad, with more than half of our players having competed at pinnacle events.
鈥淲hile it鈥檚 an exciting time for those selected, I鈥檇 like to acknowledge the players who have missed out. Their contribution to the black jersey and to our team this year has been immense, and we wouldn鈥檛 be where we are today without them.
鈥淭he level of depth and internal competition we have seen from our wider squad made the selection process very difficult, however, this speaks to the growth and exciting future of women鈥檚 rugby in Aotearoa.鈥
The Black Ferns begin their World Cup campaign against Spain on August 25, before meeting Japan on September 1.
They close out pool play against Ireland, who beat the Black Ferns during last year鈥檚 WXV 1 tournament, on September 8, with quarterfinals beginning on September 14.
Should they make it through to the final, that is scheduled to be played at Twickenham on September 28.
