A former Warriors utility has revealed he suffers from symptoms related to the neurodegenerative disease CTE after allegedly suffering two concussions a season.
Nathan Wood played more than 114 first-class rugby league games in the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL), Australian Rugby League (ARL) and National Rugby League (NRL) competitions over nine years from 1993.
The 53-year-old made 17 appearances for the Warriors during the 2001 NRL season, before moving to England to finish his career in 2005.
Speaking to SEN鈥檚 The Run Home podcast, Wood said he was 鈥渄iagnosed with a pretty CTE [chronic traumatic encephalopathy] diagnosis鈥 about 18 months ago after speaking with former British teammate Nick Fozzard 鈥 who had revealed a similar diagnosis on social media.
鈥淚 said to him, 鈥榃hat are the symptoms?鈥 and he told me, and I go, 鈥楳ate, I鈥檝e had that for ages鈥.
鈥淎nd he told me that I should get tested, and I was like, 鈥業 don鈥檛 want to know鈥, and he was like, 鈥榶ou鈥檝e got to know鈥.鈥
Wood said he had his first 鈥渞eally bad鈥 concussion playing for an U21-grade side 鈥 after which he went home, went to sleep and lost his eyesight.
鈥淚 was in intensive care for two days, completely blind, and then I had to take a year off footy.鈥
He said that between the ages of 20 and 35, when he retired, he got knocked out twice a season.
鈥淭he chances of coming through that unscathed are pretty much zero.
鈥淚 knew there were things going on with me that weren鈥檛 normal, but I just kept it dark, as you do.鈥
Wood said he had 133 scans done 鈥 108 of which were abnormal.
He added that his brother Garth 鈥 a former rugby league professional 鈥 鈥渘o doubt has got CTE鈥 and his father Barry 鈥 also a first-grade player 鈥 suffers from Parkinson鈥檚.
鈥淪o that鈥檚 three generations of footballers there, we鈥檝e all had our fair share of knocks and have these CTE diagnoses, although my dad hasn鈥檛 been tested and neither has my brother.鈥
Dementia Australia says CTE is linked to repeated head injuries, including concussions and sub-concussive impacts. The most common factors stem from contact sports, repeated falls, or assaults.
鈥淐TE can only be definitively diagnosed after death through neuropathological examination,鈥 it said.
鈥淒uring life, a medical specialist may diagnose you with suspected CTE, called 鈥榯raumatic encephalopathy syndrome鈥.鈥
