Top prospect signs with Crusaders through 2028 as rising 'hybrid' talent

One of the most exciting young talents in New Zealand rugby has committed his future to the Crusaders.

Oli Mathis, the 20-year-old sensation, has signed with the reigning Super Rugby champions until the end of the 2028 season. Mathis will first link up with the Crusaders鈥 wider training group in 2026 before stepping up to a fulltime contract in 2027.

Mathis has gained attention through his ability to play as both a loose forward and an outside back 鈥 earning recognition as one of New Zealand rugby鈥檚 first 鈥渉ybrid鈥 players.

In the recently completed Bunnings NPC, Mathis played for Waikato predominantly as a winger; however, he鈥檒l be conditioned as a loose forward in Crusaders colours.

鈥淚 guess I played more wing this year. I definitely see myself long-term as a flanker,鈥 says Mathis.

Physically, he is transitioning into that role.

鈥淚鈥檓 101kg now, but just slowly building my body - and just not rushing into it. I want to play for a long time, not a short time.鈥

Mathis says that despite focusing on one position, hybrid isn鈥檛 a dirty word to him.

鈥淚 think it鈥檚 exciting. Like not many people are doing it, to be fair. I see a few more in the NPC have been doing it this year, but I think it鈥檚 cool. The game鈥檚 changing so fast and it鈥檚 cool to be able to play two positions. I鈥檓 happy to do what鈥檚 best for the team.鈥

Crusaders head coach Rob Penney is delighted to have Mathis at Rugby Park and is clear that they see him as a loose forward first.

鈥淟ook, the aim is to create another All Black, and he鈥檚 not going to be one probably as a hybrid,鈥 says Penney.

Penney concedes that hybrid players are becoming more common 鈥 but the true value is yet to be seen.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 know if the game鈥檚 ready for it yet. There鈥檚 a bit of it floating around, like it鈥檚 happening in the United Kingdom a little bit.

鈥淛ust for someone like Oli, he could be such a special player in one position. Let鈥檚 get him settled and then you know at some point in his future career if he ends up being a hybrid, that鈥檚 for others to decide,鈥 says Penney.

鈥淏ut it鈥檚 not out of the question, you know, going forward that something like that doesn鈥檛 happen.鈥

The title-winning coach is also being challenged on his stance by his attack coach, James Marshall.

鈥淛ames is very innovative and thinks outside the box a lot and he鈥檚 a massive advocate for the hybrid,鈥 says Penney.

Regardless of where Mathis plays 鈥 or how he鈥檚 played, his skill set and signing has created plenty of excitement ahead of pre-season at Crusaders headquarters.

鈥淲e鈥檙e going to have eight backs out there, aren鈥檛 we?鈥 said Penney.
