Former Silver Ferns captain Casey Kopua 鈥渁bsolutely loved every minute鈥 of court time six years after retiring from professional netball.
The 39-year-old made a shock return on Sunday for the injury-depleted Giants in the Suncorp Super Netball competition, answering an SOS call from coach Julie Fitzgerald.
Kopua hadn鈥檛 played a competitive match since helping the Silver Ferns win the , when she was named most valuable player (MVP) of the final.
While they lost 71-61 to the Melbourne Vixens, Kopua 鈥渁bsolutely loved every minute of it鈥.
鈥淚 feel like my lungs at patches were heaving. But it鈥檚 just like riding a bike, if you put a ball in front of me I鈥檒l go and go and go.
鈥淚t鈥檚 definitely a lot faster [in Australia] but I feel like you can get away with a bit more in the circle.
鈥淚 definitely think for me it鈥檚 my mind and being able to concentrate and focus those channels again, but I can only go up from here hopefully.鈥
Kopua is signed on for three weeks, with an extension possible.
鈥淥ne of the things I love about her is she鈥檚 a winner,鈥 said Fitzgerald.
鈥淚 think that will be incredible for our team.鈥
Fitzgerald coached Kopua at the Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic when there was a trans-Tasman competition.
Kopua also played with Giants stalwarts Jo Harten and Jamie-Lee Price at the Magic.
Giants defender Erin O鈥橞rien said it was a cool experience playing alongside Kopua.
鈥淕etting Casey back there was an amazing experience, I鈥檝e learnt so much from her,鈥 said O鈥橞rien.
鈥淚 never felt lost, always felt comfortable. It was so cool.鈥
The Giants are last in the standings and are about to face the Adelaide Thunderbirds and Sunshine Coast Lightning.
If the Giants do extend Kopua鈥檚 tenure, she could end up facing off against the unbeaten New South Wales Swifts, who have Silver Ferns shooter in their team.
