‘We don’t necessarily know any details’: Silver Ferns await clarity after review

Players remain in the dark over how the Silver Ferns environment will change after Dame Noeline Taurua鈥檚 reinstatement as head coach.

Netball New Zealand (NNZ) have determined Taurua鈥檚 integrity is sound, more than nine months after player complaints about feeling 鈥渦nsafe鈥 in the Ferns environment.

It鈥檚 been six weeks since the 2019 World Cup-winner was stood down days out from the Taini Jamison series. Taurua and NNZ have since been locked in negotiations over how to resolve the matter.

In a statement released on Saturday, NNZ said: 鈥淣etball NZ and Dame Noeline have agreed to implement enhancements to support wellbeing and performance, including strengthening the player voice鈥.

However, NNZ chief executive Jennie Wyllie and board chair Matt Whineray refused to pinpoint any specifics over these changes when they spoke to the Herald on Sunday.

The Ferns are divided over Taurua, with the likes of Grace Nweke and skipper Karin Burger confirming they personally do not have a problem with her coaching.

While Taurua is technically back as head coach, she will not rejoin the team until next year. NNZ said the 2019 World Cup-winner will sit out the impending Northern Tour of Scotland and England to 鈥渕inimise disruption鈥.

After New Zealand鈥檚 upset Constellation Cup victory over Australia in Hamilton, Burger said they only found out about Taurua鈥檚 reinstatement the same day as the decision was made public.

鈥淲e don鈥檛 necessarily know any details or anything around it, but also acknowledging that, currently, our situation is still what it is. We have to focus on what we can do now.

鈥淓veryone will deal with it in their own way. I can only speak to my own experiences. It鈥檚 not a conversation in the group at the moment because we鈥檝e got a task at hand.鈥

Burger is confident they will get clarity on what changes will be implemented when Taurua fully returns to the helm next year.

鈥淚鈥檓 sure the information is there. I鈥檓 sure they鈥檙e open to [us] asking those questions. It鈥檚 just when we do want to, and what鈥檚 the best timing for us to get those answers out of them.

鈥淲e have had a discussion in the leadership group, especially around making sure that we are task-focused at the moment.鈥

Burger said they will finish the ongoing Constellation Cup series before conversing over any alterations to the test environment.

鈥淪o, not wanting to confuse us and clog our brains even more. It鈥檚 selective about when we should be asking those questions and when we should be getting that information.

鈥淪ome people might want to know the detail, some people might not want to know the detail. So, also understanding there鈥檚 processes that need to happen around what鈥檚 the best way to give that information and whether the whole group needs it or wants it.鈥

Burger said she has not thought much about whether Taurua鈥檚 presence on the Northern Tour would be disruptive.

鈥淐urrently very much here and now focused. And I know that鈥檚 probably not the answer people want to know, but it鈥檚 unfortunately what we have to do at the moment. Once the series is done, I鈥檓 sure we鈥檒l get into the nitty-gritty of that.鈥

The Silver Ferns can level the Constellation Cup with a win against the Diamonds on Wednesday in Christchurch.

Drawing the series 2-all would force an extra time period to decide the title.
