There鈥檚 never been any doubt about David Nyika鈥檚 in-ring ability.
But as the cruiserweight boxer steps into the ring tomorrow night against compatriot Nik Charalampous on the undercard of the Sonny Bill Williams-Paul Gallen bout in Sydney, his performance will be telling.
The fight will determine whether the former Olympian has overcome the mental hurdles that have clouded him since his IBF world title loss to Jai Opetaia in January.
Nyika admitted during the Sonny Bill Williams-Paul Gallen pre-fight press conference that it hasn鈥檛 been an easy camp 鈥減sychologically鈥 and that he expected to be a world champion right now.

鈥淚鈥檝e always taken pride in my resilience,鈥 Nyika told 九一星空无限talk ZB in Sydney.
鈥淎nd I know that鈥檚 the only way forward, it鈥檚 to keep punching.
鈥淚鈥檝e had to do a lot of self-discovery in this time and a lot of it鈥檚 been psychological and mental growth, but that鈥檚 what will make me a better person and athlete.
鈥淏oxing鈥檚 a humbling sport and I love it for that reason.鈥
The two-time Commonwealth Games champion was mum when asked whether he鈥檚 cleared his mental and psychological barriers.
鈥淲ell, we鈥檒l have to find out on fight night. This has been fun. I have to make it fun otherwise you can鈥檛 sit in your rut for too long, it鈥檚 bad for your soul.
鈥淚鈥檓 just glad to be back and around familiar people.鈥
A hard-nosed journeyman in Charalampous is the ideal opponent for Nyika in his comeback fight.
The 32-year-old has yet to be knocked out in his career, with his lone stoppage coming as a result of a knee injury.

Stopping 鈥淭he Greek鈥 would do wonders for Nyika鈥檚 confidence.
鈥淗e鈥檚 a stand-up bloke when it comes to the fight game. He鈥檚 been in there with the best and he鈥檚 a survivor. He鈥檚 hard to kill, so it鈥檒l be a good test.鈥
While the main event lacks the mutual respect between the former rugby league titans, Nyika鈥檚 bout sits at the other end of the spectrum, far from a surprise given one of the combatants is 鈥淭he Nice Guy鈥 himself.
鈥淗e鈥檚 a great guy. He鈥檚 turned up in shape, he looks like he鈥檚 had full preparation for the fight, so I think we鈥檙e going to throw down. I鈥檝e got heaps of respect for him,鈥 Nyika says.
The pair are no strangers to each other, having sparred when Nyika was coming up through the ranks.
鈥淚鈥檝e actually had a heap of memories pop up and people have sent me photos. They鈥檙e like, 鈥楻emember this?鈥 and I鈥檓 like, 鈥楴o, not really鈥. But he was trying to take my head off back in the day,鈥 Nyika recalls.
The Hamilton-born, Gatton-resident shed none of his patriotism when asked for his take on the main event between Williams and Gallen.
鈥淪onny is a bigger man and everyone knows that Gallen is a dog, but it鈥檚 a hard fight to assess from a distance because they haven鈥檛 fought recently.
鈥淚 want Sonny to do well because I know Sonny and I respect him and he鈥檚 taught me a lot about the life of an athlete and being a professional so I hope he smashes Paul.鈥
