The Black Caps have appointed the successor of arguably the most successful coach in New Zealand history.
Former South Africa, Otago and Central Districts boss Rob Walter has been appointed as the Black Caps鈥 new coach, and will take charge of the side in all formats on a X-year deal.
鈥淭he Black Caps have been a successful and highly regarded team on the world scene for some time now, and it鈥檚 a real privilege to be given the chance to add to that,鈥 Walter said.
鈥淚t鈥檚 an amazing opportunity to work with such a talented group of players and support staff through a period of time in which so many global events, as well as massive bilateral series will be contested.
鈥淚 just can鈥檛 wait to get started. It鈥檚 exciting, it鈥檚 challenging, and the opportunity is enormous for everyone.鈥
NZC chief executive Scott Weenink said it was the right time and place for Walter.
鈥淩ob is a world-class coach with an outstanding pedigree,鈥 said Weenink.
鈥淗is success in New Zealand鈥檚 domestic game, combined with his recent achievements on the global stage with South Africa, makes him the ideal candidate to lead the Black Caps.
鈥淲e鈥檙e excited to welcome Rob back home to guide our team through an exciting and challenging period, including three major ICC events.鈥
Walter boasts an impressive CV both locally and internationally, and was New Zealand Cricket鈥檚 preferred candidate to take the top job.
The 49-year-old South African resigned from his post as Proteas white ball coach in April, and returned to New Zealand to be with his wife and children, who did not relocate with him after he left Central Districts in 2023.
On Walter鈥檚 part, the timing was nigh-on perfect, after New Zealand Cricket announced the Black Caps鈥 job would be contested one week after he left his post with South Africa.
