Why Sam Darry had mixed feelings about making ABs Grand Slam squad

Lock Sam Darry admits he had mixed feelings about receiving the call to join the All Blacks on their northern tour, having initially missed out on selection.

Less than 24 hours after Scott Robertson named his 36-man squad, Patrick Tuipulotu was ruled out for at least six months with a shoulder injury that required surgery, and Darry, who was set to be named in the All Blacks XV, was called in.

His inclusion capped off a challenging 12 months for Darry, who was on the All Blacks鈥 end of year tour last year before a knee injury in training limited him to one appearance against Japan.

Then on the eve of the Blues鈥 Super Rugby Pacific title defence, he was ruled out for the entire campaign after needing shoulder surgery for an injury sustained in training.

He eventually returned for Canterbury in the NPC, playing a key role in nine games in their charge to their first title since 2017.

While he鈥檚 happy to be back, Darry, who has played six tests, admits his inclusion was a weird feeling.

鈥淚t was obviously at the expense of a good mate, Patty, who has been a mentor for me in the Blues,鈥 Darry said.

鈥淚 was obviously gutted for him, you know, he鈥檚 had a tough run with injuries, but I鈥檓 obviously excited.

鈥淚t鈥檚 an awesome tour away, awesome opportunity to come in and to be a part of the group and to try grow as a player and keep getting better.鈥

While he鈥檚 been out of the international set-up, Darry was appreciative of his time with Canterbury.

Despite not playing in the final, he says the domestic competition helped him rediscover his passion for rugby after a lengthy stint on the sidelines.

鈥淚t was honestly great to just get out there and play some footy,鈥 Darry said.

鈥淲hen you spend a bit of time away from the game, you remember the reason you play, and remember how lucky we are to do what we do.

鈥淚t gives you a great perspective on being able to be out there and play with your mates and you find the enjoyment again.

鈥淚鈥檓 stoked we [Canterbury] won. Obviously, they didn鈥檛 really need me, so it was awesome to see the boys get the job done after the year we鈥檝e had.鈥

The All Blacks open their northern tour against Ireland in Chicago, in a match being dubbed the 鈥榬ematch鈥.

That鈥檚 because Soldier Field is the location where Ireland claimed their first ever win over the All Blacks, 40-29, nine years ago.

The teams are split 5-5 in their previous 10 meetings, with Ireland also claiming a historic series win in New Zealand in 2022.

Darry was at Christ College preparing for a rowing session when that game was played, and he knows the importance of making a statement as the All Blacks chase another Grand Slam crown, and their first since 2010.

鈥淲e鈥檝e had a look and winning the Grand Slam is an awesome opportunity,鈥 Darry said. 鈥淵ou have to take it one at a time, but I think success for us looks like four wins.

鈥淐oming back into the environment has been awesome and seeing the kind of standard that everyone holds themselves to.鈥

After the match against Ireland, the All Blacks head to the United Kingdom, for clashes against Scotland, England and Wales.
