Former Wallabies captain Phil Kearns has labelled Kiwi scrum coach Mike Cron as the 鈥渦nsung hero鈥 for changing their fortunes ahead of Saturday鈥檚 opening Bledisloe Cup test against the All Blacks at Eden Park.
Cron came out of retirement to join Joe Schmidt鈥檚 coaching staff last year, having previously worked with the All Blacks for over 200 tests and the Black Ferns鈥 successful 2022 Rugby World Cup triumph.
At the time, Cron said joining the Wallabies would be a 鈥渉ell of a challenge鈥 but over time, the man known as 鈥渢he scrum doctor鈥 has worked his magic to improve Australia鈥檚 set piece.
The changes have been noticeable during the Rugby Championship, with former All Blacks lock Tom Donnelly also joining the Wallabies鈥 coaching ranks.
Now the New Zealand coaches must come up with a game plan to create history and beat the All Blacks at Eden Park in order to keep their hopes alive of reclaiming the Bledisloe Cup for the first time in over 20 years.
Speaking to the Country Sport Breakfast, Kearns, who played 67 tests for the Wallabies, said the team were now reaping the rewards of Cron鈥檚 influence.
鈥淢ike Cron is the guy who鈥檚 probably an unsung hero ... because he is a very much behind-the-scenes man,鈥 Kearns said.

鈥淲hat he鈥檚 been able to do with the Australian scrum has been absolutely fantastic and we actually have a scrum now that鈥檚 got a solid footing.
鈥淕uys like James Slipper, you know, despite his age, and I don鈥檛 mean that disrespectfully, is scrummaging as well as I鈥檝e ever seen him.
Kearns said the lineout鈥檚 been pretty solid too, 鈥漵o Mike鈥檚 had a massive influence".
鈥淛oe Schmidt is a very humble man, but what he鈥檚 been able to do to instil that confidence and that belief in the team is something that we haven鈥檛 seen for, well, a couple of decades.鈥
The Wallabies must avoid defeat on Saturday to ensure they head to Perth with the chance of possibly lifting the Bledisloe Cup again, which they last held in 2003.
But history is against them. They haven鈥檛 beaten the All Blacks in New Zealand since 2001, failing to win any of the following 29 away Bledisloe tests.
On top of that, they鈥檝e lost their last 23 tests against the All Blacks at Eden Park, with 20 of those defeats coming during New Zealand鈥檚 51-match unbeaten run at the venue.

Despite their Auckland struggles, Kearns took a swipe at the All Blacks鈥 fortress, saying there is 鈥渘othing special鈥 about the venue.
鈥淚t鈥檚 more special for New Zealanders than it is for people who come in from around the world to play rugby or cricket there,鈥 Kearns said.
鈥淭here鈥檚 nothing particularly daunting about it. The grandstands aren鈥檛 massive. It doesn鈥檛 hold a huge crowd, like it鈥檚 not like ... Suncorp ... or Perth Stadium or the MCG ... so it鈥檚 got me buggered why it鈥檚 so special.鈥
The All Blacks and Wallabies will name their squads on Thursday, with a handful of tickets remaining for the clash.
