Scott Barrett says the All Blacks aren鈥檛 reading anything into suggestions of a weakened French outfit as the New Zealand side look to break a three-game losing streak against Les Bleus.
It comes after France coach Fabien Galthie last night named his side tasked with facing the All Blacks in Dunedin tomorrow, including eight uncapped players.
Speaking on the eve of the first test at Forsyth Barr Stadium, All Blacks captain Barrett said any French side that comes up against the black jersey deserves the 鈥渦tmost respect鈥.
鈥淲e鈥檝e certainly prepared like that. The Dave Gallaher Trophy is on the line, and we certainly haven鈥檛 had much success of recent years against the French, so we鈥檙e looking to turn that around in this series.鈥
Asked if it was disrespectful for the French to send an inexperienced squad to New Zealand, Barrett disagreed and said their management would select the appropriate team.
鈥淲ith debutants and a mix of experience on the bench, I鈥檓 sure they鈥檙e going to, you know, fire everything at us,鈥 he said.
All Blacks coach Scott Robertson has called upon four uncapped players to make their debut in the year鈥檚 first test.
Fabian Holland and Christian Lio-Willie have been thrust into their first All Blacks starts, while Ollie Norris and Du鈥橮lessis Kirifi will debut off the bench.
Barrett said he expected the players making their debut to express themselves in the jersey and trust their instincts.
The 80-test All Black will pack down alongside newbie Holland in the second row on Saturday night.
鈥淗e鈥檚 got great energy. He certainly backs himself, which is great to see and you鈥檇 hope that for anyone who has their first test match, that they go out there and they back themselves,鈥 Barrett said of the first Dutch All Black.
鈥淗e鈥檚 played some impressive footy and earned his selection for the test start tomorrow night, so yeah, hugely excited for him and looking forward to getting to work with him.鈥
On Kirifi鈥檚 selection, Barrett said the loose forward was ready for test-match rugby.
鈥淗e plays a physical game, combative, loves the breakdown, so he鈥檚 going to be a real asset to this team going forward.鈥
Meanwhile, Barrett said the side is bolstered with the return of brother Jordie in the midfield, fresh off his sabbatical with Ireland鈥檚 Leinster.
鈥淗e鈥檚 got great energy, coming back in ... He鈥檚 brought a few things back, which is great for this group and I鈥檓 sure he will be looking to put a great performance in tomorrow night,鈥 he said.
France have won their past three tests against the All Blacks, stretching back to 2021 and are aiming for four straight over New Zealand for the first time.
However, they haven鈥檛 won on New Zealand soil against the All Blacks since 2009.
