From roofer to All Black: Rookie Kyle Preston's banner year

It took Kyle Preston just one Super Rugby Pacific appearance to put himself in the spotlight.

Earning a contract with the Crusaders after helping Wellington win the NPC title, it was expected he would likely fight for back-up minutes at halfback behind Noah Hotham.

He earned the nod behind Hotham for the Crusaders鈥 season opener against the Hurricanes and, after just 10 minutes, opportunity came knocking.

Preston was inserted into the contest after Hotham sustained an injury, going on to score a hat-trick and play a starring role in a 33-25 win. He finished the season with 14 appearances, starting four of those, and was on the field to help the Crusaders close out the grand final.

Already a career year for the 25-year-old, inclusion in the All Blacks Rugby Championship squad as injury cover for Hotham (ankle) and Cam Roigard (foot) could see him add another milestone moment in the coming weeks.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a funny one. Obviously, when the news came out about Cam [Roigard], I had about 20 or so messages like 鈥榟ave you heard anything?鈥 Preston told 九一星空无限talk ZB.

鈥淵ou kind of start thinking a little bit, 鈥榠t could be me, who knows?鈥 But I try to not build myself up too much around that sort of stuff, because you can get hyped up around it and, if you don鈥檛 hear anything, it鈥檚 a bit of a letdown.鈥

Preston said he got the call from All Blacks coach Scott Robertson about an hour before the Rugby Championship squad was announced on Monday.

At the surface, it鈥檚 been a rapid rise for the 25-year-old who, a year or so ago, was playing club rugby and working as a roofer. He completed his roofing apprenticeship just prior to the 2024 NPC season; the timing working out nicely as he played his way into a Crusaders contract and fulltime work as a rugby player.

But, for Preston, it鈥檚 the culmination of a decade of dedication.

鈥淚t鈥檚 funny because, like, only really over the last couple of years, you get the recognition for what I鈥檝e done, but it鈥檚 been built over 10 or so years of putting in a bit of hard work and dedication. It鈥檚 awesome to finally get a bit of props for what I鈥檝e been doing,鈥 he said.

鈥淚t鈥檚 been a long journey. The last 12 months has been pretty full on. I鈥檓 super lucky and grateful to get the opportunity that I鈥檝e gotten and making the most of it while I鈥檓 here. I just want to continue to do that and hopefully I can do that in the black jersey.鈥

He was one of four uncapped players called in, alongside Chiefs duo Simon Parker and Leroy Carter, and Hurricanes prop Tevita Mafileo. Parker was called into the main 36-man squad, with Carter and Mafileo joining Preston among the six players named as injury cover.

Injured quintet Hotham, Roigard, Tyrel Lomax, Luke Jacobson and Caleb Clarke will all remain in New Zealand when the side travels to Argentina ahead of next week鈥檚 Championship opener.

鈥淗e said congrats and, pretty much, see you Friday,鈥 Preston said of his conversation with Robertson.

鈥淗e just said, 鈥榳e鈥檝e seen what you鈥檝e been doing with the Crusaders this year, we鈥檙e excited to have you in鈥 and he knows I鈥檒l make the most of this opportunity. That鈥檚 all I can really do; be myself and hopefully add to the environment with what I鈥檝e got.鈥
