This weekend's wintry blast in the South Island is bringing smiles to those awaiting the start of the ski season.
Mount Hutt's skifields are due to open on June 10, and Ski Area Manager James McKenzie said the 35-centimetre dumping of snow overnight has them on track for a stellar start to the season.
"It's perfect timing. We've got most of our seasonal staff starting up later this week and they'll be driving into Methven, looking up at a white mountain and feeling pretty excited I imagine."
James McKenzie said high winds mean the road to the mountain will be closed tonight, but they'll reopen in the morning so those who want to get a first glimpse of the winter wonderland can pop up for a look.
