Some Waikato farmers are worried they might not see any significant rain until well into next year.
A Water Alert Level One has been placed on Hamilton City, Waikato District and Waipa District areas.
The restriction means sprinkles can only be used between 6am to 8am and 6pm to 8pm, although hand-held hosing is permitted.
It comes as other parts of New Zealand are feeling the heat with Central Otago experiencing long dry spells, and Wainuiomata near Wellington having it's lowest November rainfall since 1890.
Only 8mm of rain was recorded at Masterton in Wairarapa, making it the driest November since 1992.
Federated Farmers Waikato president Andrew McGiven said there has been a noticeable change in his area.
"We've just come through our probably wettest winter ever. It's just surprising and even alarming just how quick it has dried out".
McGiven said it's long dry spells that threaten stock and crops.
