New Zealand is deploying a Defence Force plane to the Middle East in the hope of evacuating Kiwis from the region absorbed in 鈥渆xtremely worrying鈥 conflict.
It comes after the United States bombed several nuclear sites in Iran, almost 50 years since the US Air Force was last active in Iran.
Foreign Minister Winston Peters and Defence Minister Judith Collins released a joint statement at 3pm, stating a C-130J Hercules plane would carry Defence Force and Foreign Affairs personnel to the Middle East.
Peters and Collins are holding a press conference from 3pm to answer questions about the deployment.
The pair鈥檚 statement didn鈥檛 clarify where the Hercules would be based, nor the range of personnel travelling.
The plane was expected to leave tomorrow from Auckland and would take 鈥渟everal days鈥 to reach its destination.

Peters said it was 鈥渉ighly uncertain鈥 when the airspace around Iran and Israel would allow for the Hercules to facilitate evacuation flights.
He noted discussions with commercial airlines were ongoing but repeated his advice that Kiwis should leave the region if they could do so safely.
鈥淲e know it will not be safe for everyone to leave Iran or Israel and many people may not have access to transport or fuel supplies,鈥 Peters said.
鈥淚f you are in this situation, you should shelter in place, follow appropriate advice from local authorities and stay in touch with family and friends where possible.鈥
All New Zealanders in the Middle East, not just in Iran and Israel, were urged to register on SafeTravel.
New Zealanders in Iran and Israel needing urgent consular assistance should call the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emergency consular call centre on +64 99 20 20 20.
Earlier today, US President Donald Trump proclaimed his Air Force had carried out a 鈥渧ery successful attack鈥 on three Iran nuclear sites.
Peters acknowledged the recent US strikes on Iran as he called for 鈥渄iplomacy and dialogue鈥.
鈥淥ngoing military action in the Middle East is extremely worrying and it is critical further escalation is avoided.
鈥淣ew Zealand strongly supports efforts towards diplomacy. We urge all parties to return to talks.
鈥淒iplomacy will deliver a more enduring resolution than further military action.鈥
