New Zealand First Minister and Northland-based MP Shane Jones says he wants to find out the 鈥渨hole story鈥 behind Labour MP Peeni Henare鈥檚 shock resignation, comparing the outcome to the dysfunction inflicting Te P膩ti M膩ori.
Henare, an MP of 12 years and former minister, announced yesterday he was leaving politics by confirming he would not contest his former electorate of T膩maki Makaurau and would not seek a position on Labour鈥檚 list.
Henare told the Herald yesterday the decision had been informed by losing the Auckland seat in the 2023 election and the 鈥渂rutal loss鈥 in last year鈥檚 byelection to Te P膩ti M膩ori鈥檚 Oriini Kaipara.
Henare said he had 鈥渘o bad feeling鈥 towards Labour, claiming he had been assured by the party he could have contested T膩maki Makaurau in the 2026 election.
Labour leader Chris Hipkins, who initially refused to confirm Henare鈥檚 departure or express confidence in him ahead of the MP鈥檚 public statements, said the party would miss Henare as a passionate advocate for M膩ori.

Jones, speaking this morning after the opening of a newly sealed Haruru Falls Rd which leads into the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, questioned the circumstances around Henare鈥檚 resignation.
鈥淚 think it鈥檚 important that the whole story comes out,鈥 he said.
鈥淧eople have said did I know about it, I had no idea that Peeni was going to move on.
鈥淧eeni鈥檚 grandfather was our paramount chief of the north, the last commander of the M膩ori Battalion, dearly loved figure throughout all the tribes of the motu [country].
鈥淚鈥檓 not across all the details, but I want to make sure that the story, when it鈥檚 fully told, that we focus on what鈥檚 happened because he struck me as a guy who had quite a large potential for politics.鈥
Jones, a relative of Henare, wouldn鈥檛 elaborate on any suspicions he had as to what he thought was the 鈥渨hole story鈥.
Asked if he believed something untoward had occurred, Jones replied: 鈥淚鈥檓 going to go and find out what exactly has happened.
鈥淭here鈥檒l be the kumara vine that will inform me.鈥
Jones said it was up to Henare and Hipkins to ensure a 鈥渧ery comprehensive account鈥 was issued regarding Henare鈥檚 decision, given Henare鈥檚 standing in the north.
Henare yesterday indicated he might not join his Labour colleagues at tomorrow鈥檚 p艒whiri for politicians at Waitangi, choosing instead to sit with the hauk膩inga or the home people of the marae.
Jones suggested such an outcome would compete with the 鈥渂reakdown of the M膩ori Party鈥, which last year expelled two of its MPs.
鈥淭here鈥檚 quite a lot of volatility happening in M膩ori politics at the moment.鈥
