Prime Minister Christopher Luxon maintains the Government鈥檚 efforts to secure a free trade deal with India before the election are progressing well as he skips Parliament to meet with India鈥檚 trade minister.

Luxon, normally present in the House for Question Time on Tuesday and Wednesday, chose not to attend today and instead flew to Auckland to see India鈥檚 Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, who is making his first official visit to New Zealand.

The PM had committed to achieving a deal with India before the end of the current term of Government. While in India in March, he and Trade Minister Todd McClay confirmed negotiations would begin.

Goyal鈥檚 discussions with McClay and Luxon during his visit were the fourth round of official negotiations.

Luxon described the potential deal as a 鈥渞eally important driver of the Government鈥.

鈥淭he fact that he鈥檚 come down to New Zealand is a really big sign of the conversation, the progress that we鈥檙e making, and it鈥檚 a really important relationship for New Zealand.鈥

He dismissed the suggestion that his involvement could indicate negotiations had stalled.

鈥淣o, the negotiations are going well.

鈥淭hey are tough, as you would expect and quite reasonably so, but there is massive commitment.

鈥淸Goyal] has made a big effort to come to New Zealand for a few days to continue to advance trade negotiations, and he鈥檚 a good man and a good friend. I just want to make sure we鈥檙e building that relationship.鈥

The PM affirmed McClay was handling the negotiations well, then added, 鈥渂ut I think as a Prime Minister, when we鈥檝e got a lot invested in it as well, it鈥檚 not unhelpful that I鈥檓 there as well just to say hello.鈥

He restated the commitment to secure the deal before the next election.

鈥淭he fact that we鈥檝e had several rounds already, the fact that he has come down to the country, says that we鈥檙e making good progress, so it鈥檚 positive.鈥

India鈥檚 Ministry of Commerce last night issued a press release about the trade talks, welcoming the next round of negotiations.

鈥淏oth sides are working constructively to build on the progress achieved in earlier rounds, to reach convergence on outstanding issues and move towards the early conclusion of the FTA,鈥 it said.

鈥淣egotiations in this round are focusing on key areas, including trade in goods, trade in services, and rules of origin.鈥

In a press release yesterday, McClay said Goyal鈥檚 visit reflected the 鈥渟trong momentum鈥 both countries had created in pursuing a deal.
