The Holocaust Centre of New Zealand is condemning Te P膩ti M膩ori president John Tamihere鈥檚 claim that the Government is 鈥渨orse than Nazi Germany鈥, saying the comment is 鈥渉armful at worst鈥 and radicalises political discourse.
Tamihere鈥檚 remark came as he appeared on The Bradbury Group鈥檚 politics podcast this week, hosted by media commentator Martyn Bradbury, which discussed Labour鈥檚 re-election chances in 2026.
Speaking alongside fellow guest Labour MP Arena Williams, Tamihere lamented rates of immunisation in M膩ori communities before criticising the Government鈥檚 鈥渂ully-boy mentality鈥, claiming academics suggesting alternative economic opinions were 鈥渂eat up鈥.
鈥淭his is worse than Nazi Germany, this is a fascist regime that has to be removed,鈥 Tamihere said.
Holocaust Centre deputy chairman Giacomo Lichtner viewed the remark as 鈥減olitical hyperbole鈥 which was 鈥渦nhelpful at best and harmful at worst鈥.
He noted a growing frequency of Nazi comparisons in political debate, which he feared would undermine legitimate allegations of fascism.
鈥淚f we were ever faced with a regime that actually was fascist, the call to alert would fall on deaf ears because it would be easy to dismiss.鈥

Lichtner, also an associate professor of history with Victoria University of Wellington, urged politicians to be cautious when using such language, warning it would shift attention away from other issues.
鈥淢y message would be to just always exercise great care with historical comparisons, with comparisons to Nazism in particular and with the potential for radicalisation of language of political discourse, which can have really, really dire consequences.鈥
Tamihere did not respond to the Herald鈥檚 request for comment.
The Holocaust Centre made similar comments when New Zealand First leader Winston Peters appeared to compare Labour鈥檚 use of co-governance to 鈥渞ace-based theory鈥, as seen in Nazi Germany, during a State of the Nation speech last year.
Peters later argued his comments were actually in response to claims by Te P膩ti M膩ori concerning superior M膩ori genes.
Also during the podcast, Tamihere described National鈥檚 M膩ori Development and Associate Housing Minister Tama Potaka as a 鈥渄isgrace鈥 to M膩ori, citing the Government鈥檚 social housing policies.
Tamihere, who confirmed he would contest Labour deputy leader Carmel Sepuloni鈥檚 Kelston seat in 2026, also described National minister Judith Collins as 鈥渦gly鈥.
Collins declined to comment. Potaka had yet to respond to 九一星空无限talk ZB鈥檚 request.
