Seymour, Peters distance themselves from Luxon's Netanyahu 'lost the plot' remarks

Act鈥檚 David Seymour and New Zealand First鈥檚 Winston Peters have distanced themselves from comments Prime Minister Christopher Luxon made last week when he said Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu had 鈥渓ost the plot鈥.

Seymour, Luxon鈥檚 Deputy Prime Minister, told the Herald it鈥檚 鈥渂etter just to keep your thoughts to yourself鈥 when dealing with most international leaders, while Peters, the Foreign Affairs Minister, said 鈥渋t鈥檚 not language I use鈥.

Neither of the politicians would comment last week, wanting to verifying Luxon鈥檚 remarks first and understand their context.

Israeli Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Sharren Haskel fired back at the New Zealand leader, saying he wouldn鈥檛 comprehend 鈥渢he challenges that come with facing Hamas鈥 and suggesting New Zealand鈥檚 鈥渕ost deadly enemy is a possum or a cat鈥.

The Prime Minister made the comment last week after the Herald asked whether he agreed with Labour leader Chris Hipkins that an 鈥渦nfolding genocide鈥 was occurring in Gaza.

鈥淚 think Netanyahu has gone way too far. I think he has lost the plot. What we are seeing overnight, the attack on Gaza City, is utterly, utterly unacceptable,鈥 Luxon said.

He said Netanyahu wasn鈥檛 鈥渓istening to the international community鈥, but Luxon believed he had been 鈥渃onsistent鈥 with his language and New Zealand had 鈥渟tood up for values鈥.

The Prime Minister said the comment that Netanyahu had 鈥渓ost the plot鈥 was his 鈥減ersonal view鈥.

鈥淎s a human being, looking at the situation, that is how I feel about it,鈥 Luxon said.

Seymour on Tuesday said they were Luxon鈥檚 鈥減ersonal comments鈥.

鈥淚 just take the view that when you鈥檙e dealing with any other leader, unless it鈥檚 someone like Vladimir Putin, then it鈥檚 better just to keep your thoughts to yourself, which is what I do. But I respect his right to express his opinion, as he said,鈥 the Act leader said.

Seymour said he didn鈥檛 think using those terms helped the situation.

鈥淲hat we have is a world with a lot of pain, a lot of suffering. We want the conflict to end, and we want human rights to be upheld, and so I just say, it doesn鈥檛 really help. If you鈥檙e making fun of Kim Jong-un, then maybe, but I don鈥檛 think it helps.鈥

Asked about Haskel鈥檚 response, Seymour replied: 鈥淥nce you get into a war of words, you鈥檙e not really solving any problems.鈥

鈥淚 respect the Prime Minister鈥檚 right to make a personal comment, which now that I鈥檝e looked at his comments, that was the context. But personally, I don鈥檛 generally get into that.鈥

Peters said it was 鈥渘ot language I use鈥 and 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 say it鈥. The Foreign Affairs Minister said 鈥淚 am the most experienced guy you鈥檝e met on this matter鈥.

Asked if the Prime Minister had shown a lack of experience, Peters said: 鈥淣ext question.鈥

Luxon didn鈥檛 back down from his comments following Haskel鈥檚 social media post, saying 鈥渢hey鈥檙e entitled to their view, we鈥檙e entitled to ours鈥.

He disputed that he played down the horrors of the October 7 attacks by Hamas on Israel, saying that when he speaks on the issue, 鈥渢he first thing out of my mouth is the abhorrence of what we saw on October 7鈥.

But Luxon said he followed those remarks by saying he expected Israel to provide 鈥渦nfettered鈥 humanitarian aid and support.

鈥淲e expect Israel to comply and make sure they鈥檙e protecting civilians as well. Go back and look at the record of my consistency in my statements.鈥

Luxon said he was the Prime Minister who designated the entirety of Hamas as a terrorist organisation.

鈥淚t鈥檚 one of the first things I did,鈥 he said, speaking of his February 2024 decision a couple of months after forming the Government.

Last week, the Government announced it would formally weigh up New Zealand鈥檚 position on the recognition of Palestine over the next month.
