Former Green Party MP Golriz Ghahraman has taken to social media to call out an Auckland restaurant she alleges subjected her dining group to 鈥済ross treatment鈥 and cancelled their booking midway through.
However, the co-owner of Atelier restaurant on Karangahape Rd has claimed Ghahraman鈥檚 own behaviour was lacking and the incident has made him question offering the eatery鈥檚 bottomless brunch into the future.
鈥淥bviously [Ghahraman] had a little bit too much to drink and didn鈥檛 behave appropriately 鈥 that鈥檚 all I can say,鈥 Atelier鈥檚 Matt Gossett claimed.
Gossett was responding to a post on Ghahraman鈥檚 Instagram account in which she was highly critical of the treatment she allegedly experienced during a visit to Atelier last Saturday, July 5.
鈥淒o not go to Atelier. We had the most gross treatment and had this booking randomly midway cancelled and not accepted, even when I showed the booking,鈥 she claimed.
鈥淎nyway, the bottomless brunch is not real. Some incredible M膩ori, Pasifika and queer leaders were totally screwed over mid brunch in the face of a written confirmation. It was sad and shit and not Karangahape kaupapa.
鈥淭his turned super racist when I tried to show staff my confirmation email and they said stuff like, 鈥榊eah, I read English鈥, and laughed but wouldn鈥檛 look at it.鈥
However, Gossett defended his restaurant to the Herald.
鈥淵ou just have to look at what we do in terms of inclusivity. It鈥檚 just ridiculous [Ghahraman鈥檚 accusations],鈥 he said.
Gossett said he did not want to comment directly on Ghahraman鈥檚 specific allegations.

Ghahraman, a member of Parliament on the Green Party鈥檚 list from 2017 to 2024, was convicted last June for shoplifting nearly $9000 worth of retail items from high-end fashion stores.
She was not given a custodial or supervision sentence but was ordered to pay fines totalling $1600 and court costs of $260. She has been denied two appeals.
Ghahraman pleaded guilty to all charges laid against her after the allegations surfaced earlier in 2024.
