A 23-year-old Southland woman diagnosed with cancer just months after her own mum鈥檚 diagnosis says she鈥檚 prioritising making memories with her young daughter and family.

Briar Dawson, mum to 3-year-old Elsie, was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer in March after undergoing a colonoscopy.

Dawson said doctors suspected she had Crohn鈥檚 disease 鈥 a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that causes inflammation, swelling, and thickening of the digestive tract.

Instead, doctors found a 15cm tumour - less than six months since Dawson鈥檚 mum was diagnosed with breast cancer in November.

鈥淭hey went to explore my bowels, they found a tumour, and they couldn鈥檛 get around it to have a look,鈥 Dawson said.

鈥淭hey brought me into a room and told me that they were pretty sure it was cancer, but they had to do a biopsy just to make sure.

鈥淏ut they gave me all the information about cancer and stuff that day.鈥

Dawson was sent for an MRI and CT scan, alongside an appointment with a surgeon.

鈥淲hen I went in for that appointment, he told me that there was nothing that he could do and that my cancer had metastasised to my liver and my lungs,鈥 Dawson said.

鈥淚t was incurable.鈥

Dawson and her mum were now both fighting cancers, a battle which Dawson said had taken a toll on her mental health.

鈥淚t鈥檚 very hard to be a mum and try and prioritise your own health as well, with a very energetic toddler,鈥 Dawson said.

Dawson said the family was focused on making memories together, particularly for daughter Elsie.

鈥淚 just want to be able to take her out and do some things to make memories for her,鈥 Dawson said.

鈥淎nd to have some sort of support once I do pass away.

鈥淚t鈥檚 gonna be a very hard time for her cause I鈥檓 a single mum.

鈥淭he most important thing is taking lots of photos.鈥

A Givealittle page, created by Dawson鈥檚 sister Amy, aimed to raise funds as they 鈥渇ace the terrible battle together as a family鈥.

Funds raised would go towards travel for medical treatment, as they live in a rural area, and to treasure experiences and memories with Elsie and help 鈥渘avigate her young life鈥 after Dawson passes.

鈥淚 think it鈥檚 really important that if people have symptoms, to go get checked,鈥 Dawson said.

鈥淐olonoscopies for bowel cancer and colon cancer - the age is about 58.

鈥淚 was 23 when I was diagnosed, and the doctor said that they would never have even considered cancer because of my age.

鈥淚f you have warning signs - definitely go and get it checked out.鈥
