'He was aggressive': Ram that killed elderly couple belonged to neighbours

The ram which killed an elderly couple on a West Auckland property was owned by neighbours and had broken through an electric fence before the attack, according to a local resident.

However, it is still not clear if the ram was being housed in a paddock on the couple鈥檚 land or was being kept on a completely separate property when it escaped.

A neighbour, who didn鈥檛 want to be named but was not the owner of the ram, said the community along Anzac Valley Rd, Wait膩kere, had been in a 鈥済rey鈥 mood since听the deaths of Alfred Helge Hansen and Gaye Carole Hansen听April 18.

鈥淚t鈥檚 not a very nice feeling, it鈥檚 just horrible even walking up here,鈥 the neighbour said.

鈥淓verything鈥檚 gloomy and grey and just depressing and I just don鈥檛 want to do anything, you just don鈥檛 even want to go outside that side [where the couple was found].鈥

She said the Wait膩kere couple did not own the ram that attacked them and it had 鈥渆scaped鈥 from a nearby paddock through an electric fence.

鈥淲e keep thinking, why didn鈥檛 we hear anything? All I can see is the body . . . I saw them [police] shoot the ram.鈥

She described the tense stand-off between police and the ram before it was fatally shot.

鈥淗e was wild, he was aggressive, the way he was standing there looking at the cops, they weren鈥檛 coming through the fence.鈥

She said when rams are raised by humans they are not scared of people and will confront them.

鈥淚t was a hand-reared ram, and that鈥檚 what needs to get out there, people should not have hand-reared rams because they will turn a few years later.

鈥淲e鈥檝e had hand-reared rams and [my] husband has gone out in the paddock with the frying pan because it鈥檚 started attacking him.

鈥淭hey鈥檝e got concrete heads . . . they don鈥檛 feel anything.鈥

She said the couple weren鈥檛 expecting the ram to be on their property, so wouldn鈥檛 have known they were in danger.

鈥淚t鈥檚 sickening. They were lovely people just enjoying their retirement. They were in their 80s, he had bad knees, they had no time to get away.鈥

However, Stuff reported that Helge鈥檚 ex-wife Jan Hansen said the ram wasn鈥檛 a stranger to the property and had lived there for some time.

Police confirmed on Thursday that a 鈥渞am was in the paddock at the time we were notified of the deaths at 7.30am today鈥.

The ram also went after the couple鈥檚 son, who held the beast in a headlock and called for help.

鈥淎nother party at the scene suffered a minor injury after being attacked by this ram,鈥 police said.

Animal behaviour consultant Mark Vette said that ironically, hand-reared or pet rams can also be more dangerous.

While a 鈥減addock鈥 ram may steer clear of humans due to its desire to stick with the flock, a pet ram is more used to being in close contact with humans, Vette said.

When that familiarity with humans mixes with a natural desire to mate and compete during the breeding season, some rams can be more prone to charge.

鈥淭hey鈥檙e a powerful animal and they can be quite a heavy animal,鈥 Vette said.
