  • Wellington Mayor Tory Whanau鈥檚 official Instagram account @misswhanau has liked, and since un-liked, comments suggesting Government intervention in the council is a 鈥渉it-job鈥.
  • The Government has announced its intention to appoint a Crown observer as Wellington City Council revisits its 10-year budget.
  • Wellington councillors are having to cut money from the city鈥檚 Long-Term Plan after reversing their decision to sell the council鈥檚 34% shareholding in Wellington Airport.

Wellington Mayor Tory Whanau鈥檚 Instagram account has liked comments from supporters describing Government intervention at her council as a disgraceful 鈥渉it-job鈥, and suggesting politicians are 鈥渃orrupt鈥.

The comments have since been un-liked. When asked by the Herald this morning about the situation, Whanau鈥檚 office had no comment to make.

Local Government Minister Simeon Brown yesterday announced his intentions to appoint a Crown observer at Wellington City Council.

Whanau fronted a press conference following the announcement, admitting the council 鈥渕ust do better鈥. The mayor also confirmed the council would have to foot the bill for the observer.

Whanau鈥檚 office posted an Instagram reel with a clip of the press conference, captioned 鈥淚 remain totally focused on delivering for the people of Wellington鈥 and followed with a heart emoji.

In the clip, the mayor said it was her view councillors should accept the decision and work with whoever is appointed to monitor the council.

As of 6pm last night, Whanau鈥檚 account had liked three comments on the Instagram post.

The first read 鈥淲e鈥檙e with you Tory! This hit-job is disgraceful鈥.

Another comment, liked by Whanau鈥檚 account at the time, described the Wellington mayor as 鈥渁mazing鈥 and congratulated her on holding her own with 鈥渂oth the minister/govt and the press鈥.

The third remark liked by her account read 鈥渟o it鈥檚 hold tight until we can get these corrupt politicians out of power.nicely played.friends close and enemies ...鈥 [sic]

In a statement following Brown鈥檚 announcement of intervention in her council, Whanau said 鈥渨e must use this as an opportunity to put past disagreements behind us and build a coherent plan that delivers for the people of Wellington鈥.

The council鈥檚 reversal of its decision to sell its 34% stake in Wellington Airport meant the council has 鈥渟ome tough decisions to make in the coming weeks and months鈥, Whanau added.

On what would be on or off the table as the council amends its Long-Term Plan, the mayor reiterated that her focus was addressing the city鈥檚 insurance risk 鈥渨ithout increasing rates鈥.

鈥淎dditionally, I do not intend to cut projects that are critical for our city鈥檚 growth and sustainability. For me, that means protecting our social housing and continuing funding for water and key climate initiatives,鈥 she said.

Whanau鈥檚 office had no further comment to make to the Herald.

Wellington councillors had mixed views on whether Government intervention was warranted after the reversal of the airport shares sale last week.

At the time, councillor Iona Pannett said talk of intervention was 鈥渦nacceptable鈥.

鈥淚t can be a bit messy, but we鈥檙e still making good decisions,鈥 she said.

Councillor Ray Chung said if he had confidence in Whanau, he would not be running to unseat her as mayor.

鈥淲ellington City Council would never agree on anything. It鈥檚 very, very difficult,鈥 Chung told media following chatter of Government intervention and revelations the Local Government Minister was taking advice on the issue.
