A Waitangi leader is hopeful of less tension this year - following past drama at Te Tii Marae.
Two years ago, there was a spat over which kuia would accompany leaders - with veteran activist Titewhai Harawira winning the role.
Last year, her daughter Hinewhare tried to block the Governor-General from entering the meeting house.
Kaumatua Kingi Taurua says issues are being ironed out in advance.
"Don't want anymore problems as to who should lead it, and no doubt the people will decide that Titewhai will take that responsibility.'
Kingi Taurua says he hopes any protesters are respectful of those trying to hold talks on the marae.
A year ago, John Key urged Ngapuhi to put their differences aside and settle historic Treaty grievances, but the government's push to find one negotiating group in the iwi has caused further divisions.
Taurua says ministers can expect frank discussions at Te Tii Marae.
"There are two groups actually vying for who is going to be responsible for this claim.
"There's one organisation supported by the Minister of Treaty negotiation and the other one is not supported at all by Government."
