A 20-year-old American tourist suffered devastating injuries including a broken back in a life-changing head-on campervan collision.
Kaylee Phillippi had been sharing her journey across New Zealand on social media when her rental campervan was involved in a serious crash this month.
Police said another US tourist was charged with two counts of careless driving causing injury after the crash on Omanawa Rd, Western Bay of Plenty, about 11am on May 10. He is scheduled to appear in Tauranga District Court on May 23.
Hato Hone St John said they sent three ambulances, a manager, a rapid response unit and a helicopter to the crash.
鈥淥ur crews assessed and treated three patients, one in a critical condition and one in a moderate condition, who were airlifted to Waikato Hospital, and one in a serious condition who was transported by road to Tauranga Hospital.鈥
According to a post by Phillippi鈥檚 travel partner, she was set to go to Australia, Bali and Japan, but would remain in New Zealand 鈥渁 bit longer than expected鈥 after the crash.
In an Instagram post last week, Phillippi said: 鈥淚 was involved in a head-on collision a few days ago. I had to be airlifted to the hospital, where I discovered I have broken my back, nose, and my legs experienced some trauma.
鈥淚鈥檓 so thankful to still be here, and I鈥檓 thankful for all the people who have checked in on me.鈥

She said her parents 鈥渄ropped everything to be by my side鈥.
鈥淭hey have been so strong for me, and I love them so much. Just feeling overwhelmed with gratitude at the moment.
鈥淟ife moves fast. A day, a minute, a singular second 鈥 that鈥檚 how long it takes for the life you鈥檝e held so perfect and praised to bring about such a crazy and drastic change.
鈥淭hings happen that remind you how little control you actually do have.鈥

Phillippi said the experience was humbling, 鈥渉aving ... my mom feed me at 20 years old is quite a humbling experience. Wasn鈥檛 how I thought I would spend my last months being 20.鈥
She was grateful the situation wasn鈥檛 worse and had turned to her faith to deal with the aftermath of the crash.
鈥淚t鈥檚 easy in these situations to ask God why, but I have found myself only asking why it wasn鈥檛 worse. He has shown up in this big mess. He was there when my side didn鈥檛 have an airbag and my face was barely saved from being shattered.
鈥淗e was there when the witnesses just happened to be rescue divers and knew exactly what to do to keep me awake till the heli got there.鈥
Recovery efforts begin 鈥 鈥榖edridden and in a body brace鈥
It is unclear how long her recovery will take or how long she will need to remain in New Zealand.
A GoFundMe was set up on behalf of the Phillippi family for 鈥渕edical expenses and the significant cost of medical transport to bring her home when she鈥檚 stable enough to travel鈥.
Phillippi wrote on social media that surgeons 鈥渨ant to do everything possible to keep me from surgery since I鈥檓 so young鈥.

鈥淪o I will be bedridden and in a body brace for a couple weeks until I can stand, and if the bones stay in place then they won鈥檛 go through with surgery.鈥
She said she hoped her bones would heal on their own without intervention.
The rental vehicle company, Travellers Autobarn, and the Phillippi family have been approached for comment.
