- A tsunami advisory remains in place for New Zealand after a massive earthquake Wednesday morning, with Kiwis being urged to 鈥渢reat the threat as real鈥.
- The magnitude 8.8 quake struck off the coast of Kamchatka, Russia at 11.25am (NZT).
- It is the only quake over magnitude 8 this year, and the first of this size since 2021.
- A new emergency alert was issued to New Zealanders this morning at 6.31am, warning Kiwis to stay away from sea and shore.
- Nema said tsunami activity had already reached NZ.
- It said the first currents and surges are unlikely to be the largest and are expected to continue over many hours.
- The tsunami advisory has been extended and is expected to remain in place until at least 3pm Thursday.
