  • Police yet to arrest anyone for the killing of Kaea Karauria who would have turned 16 five days ago.
  • His father believes those that have information that could see those responsible locked up have received threats.
  • Fundraiser launched to help family of teen who 鈥済ave his everything to the world鈥, social media campaign started urging 鈥淛ustice for Kaea鈥

Kaea Karauria should have celebrated his 16th birthday with loved ones and mates last Sunday.

Instead, his heartbroken family continued to mourn the loss of the much-loved teen who lost his life on an Onekawa street in the early hours of May 11 after being stabbed.

Almost four weeks on, and as police continue to hunt for those responsible, the accomplished student and rising rugby player鈥檚 father has issued another plea for those who know the truth to be honest with police.

And he believes some have already been silenced after receiving 鈥渄eath threats鈥 from people close to the killer.

鈥淵our son/daughter could be next if we don鈥檛 find these gutless cowards,鈥 Ren Karauria has posted on a Napier community social media page.

鈥淩each out if you know anything! I know death threats have been sent to those with information so let鈥檚 make sure these filth including anyone hiding them are locked away for as long as possible.鈥

Karauria wrote that it only took one person 鈥渨ith the right information and enough courage to come forward and make our community a safer place for everyone鈥.

Another close relative of Kaea鈥檚 has also gone public about his hopes justice awaits both those responsible for the teen鈥檚 death and the 鈥渢hreatening鈥 behaviour.

Police would not be drawn on responding specifically to Karauria鈥檚 claims of threats being made.

In respect to the homicide investigation, Detective Inspector Martin James, Eastern District manager criminal investigations, told the Herald that police would proactively release any update when it was available.

Police have previously spoken of how they had options available to assist potential witnesses if they were concerned speaking out would impact their safety.

The grieving father鈥檚 appeal comes almost two weeks after Kaea鈥檚 mum, Kym Baker, made a public Facebook post detailing some of the pain her family has endured since the teen鈥檚 tragic death.

Kaea lost his life in the early hours of Mother鈥檚 Day.

Baker wrote how the family were 鈥渓iving this nightmare without our son鈥.

To those who had information, she added: 鈥淚 beg you to come forward鈥.

鈥淧lease help us find justice for my Son,鈥 Baker wrote.

鈥淜aea Loughlin Karauria was taken from us on Mother鈥檚 Day in the most heartbreaking way. And still, we have no answers.

鈥淢y wh膩nau is living in a constant state of grief and unanswered questions. Someone out there knows something. Even the smallest piece of information could make the biggest difference.鈥

Police: 鈥楽ome... people... may not have been truthful鈥

Police officers responding to a report of disorder found Kaea in a critical condition on Alexander Ave around 3am, May 11.

Tragically, he died at the scene as ambulance crews battled to save his life.

It is understood Kaea had been attacked 鈥 including being stabbed 鈥 during the disorder incident near the intersection of nearby Dinwiddie Ave, before making his way to where he eventually died.

There were several parties held in the immediate area, including an 18th birthday party on Dinwiddie Ave.

While police had no update to provide today, James has previously spoken of how police had 鈥渂uilt a picture鈥 on what happened leading up to Kaea鈥檚 tragic death.

That included the route that Kaea had travelled on the night 鈥 including by foot in the area - and a 鈥渢imeline of events鈥.

James has also previously spoken of the frustration caused by some people who could hold vital evidence who 鈥渕ay not have been truthful鈥 in what they had told police.

鈥淎nd we urge them to reconsider what they said and contact the team through 0800 852 525.鈥

It is understood there were about 50 people 鈥 including many teens 鈥 out and about in the Dinwiddie Ave area in the hours leading up to Kaea鈥檚 death.

A dedicated homicide team had been working long hours in a bid to get justice for the slain teen.

Investigators had executed several search warrants, while vehicles and other items had been taken by officers to be forensically examined.

鈥楯ustice for Kaea鈥

Given the many people Kaea had touched during his young life, the outpouring of grief following his fatal stabbing has been huge in Hawke鈥檚 Bay.

And it has not just been from family and friends.

Given the respect the teen was held in, it also included from the primary and intermediate schools he previously attended, as well as from Napier Boys鈥 High; the secondary school he went to, and which hosted his funeral service.

A succession of rugby teams he both played with and against have also paid tribute to him.

Highlanders star Jonah Lowe 鈥 who plays his provincial rugby for Hawke鈥檚 Bay 鈥 also took to the field in Super Rugby action with the strapping on his right wrist featuring the wording 鈥淜AEA鈥.

The support for Kaea鈥檚 heartbroken parents now includes the Givealittle fundraiser Justice for Kaea, created by a close family member.

All funds will be provided to Kaea鈥檚 parents to help 鈥渟upport them in the long road ahead鈥.

鈥淎 Mother鈥檚 and Father鈥檚 worst nightmare, on the 11th May 2025, Mothers Day, Ren and Kym woke to the worst news imaginable any parent could receive,鈥 the page states.

鈥淜aea Loughlin Karauria their 15-year-old son was tragically killed and are yet to receive the answers to how this happened.

鈥淜aea was only 15, an aspiring and inspiring rugby player, a brother to Manaia and Ihaia, a Moko, a Nephew, a Cousin, a dedicated teammate and a friend to many. He had the whole world ahead of him and gave his everything to the world.

鈥淗e didn鈥檛 deserve this and his wh膩nau deserve answers.鈥

The search for answers has also seen the creation of a 鈥淛ustice for Kaea鈥 social media campaign urging those who have information to come forward and be honest with police.

It involves a silhouetted photo of Kaea in his rugby kit, with the wording: 鈥淛ustice for Kaea... Speak Up鈥.

People have been encouraged to change their Facebook profile picture to the image, with one relative saying: 鈥淓very face that shares his name is a call for justice. Speak his name. Kaea Karauria.

鈥淓ncourage others to stand with us. Let the world see: Kaea鈥檚 life matters. Justice is not optional. Don鈥檛 stay silent - stand strong with us.鈥
