A man has died after being pulled from the water at a central Auckland beach.
Police and ambulance were called to Kohimarama Beach at 11.20am after reports a man had been removed from the water unconscious.
鈥淒espite efforts to deliver CPR, the man sadly died at the scene,鈥 a police spokesperson said.
鈥淭he death is expected to be referred to the coroner.鈥
The Herald understands people ran into the water to help the man after hearing cries for help.
He was brought back to the beach with the assistance of a paddleboarder.
After the man was pulled from the water, beachgoers formed a privacy screen around the scene using beach towels and sarongs as emergency responders attempted CPR.
Just after noon, four firefighters were seen carrying a body covered in a sheet up the beach on a stretcher and into a waiting ambulance.
A man who helped at the scene said paramedics tried to revive the man for 25 minutes.
A woman, believed to be the man鈥檚 wife, was being comforted by others on the beach.
