The wh膩nau of three men killed by a train after a man drove through a railway crossing remain 鈥渁ngry and frustrated鈥 at how long it鈥檚 taken for the driver to admit guilt.
In the High Court at Hamilton this morning, Norton Sowerby pleaded guilty to three charges of manslaughter, one each of reckless driving causing injury and driving while disqualified after the crash on Peachgrove Rd on November 13 last year.
William Chaney Marsters Brown, 46, Shylin Huirama-Osbourne, 26, and Sione Leapulu Nusipepa, 23, all died after Sowerby drove through the rail crossing at 4.30am.
Sowerby and his front passenger were seriously injured in the crash.
It鈥檚 understood that the barrier arms were down, the railway crossing lights were flashing, and another vehicle had already stopped when Sowerby drove around the car and the barrier arms before being struck by the train.
Sowerby had initially faced charges of reckless driving causing death, but the Crown last month upgraded the charges to manslaughter.
Through his lawyer, Shelley Gilbert, he pleaded guilty to all charges today.
Sowerby, who had supporters in court, was remanded in custody for sentencing in December.
Family members of the victims were in court for the hearing and told 九一星空无限 outside afterwards that they wanted Sowerby to be given three life sentences for what he did that day.
鈥榃hatever he gets won鈥檛 be enough鈥
Brown鈥檚 aunt Moana Marsters and her wh膩nau had driven from Auckland for each of Sowerby鈥檚 five court appearances, and were frustrated at how long it had taken for him to accept what he鈥檇 done.
鈥淔rustrating, angry, you know. We want him held accountable for his actions.鈥
Asked if she felt better given he鈥檇 now pleaded guilty, she said, 鈥渘ot really鈥.
鈥淏ecause we鈥檝e been coming how many times to court?
鈥淎nd now it鈥檚 come to the High Court, he wants to plead guilty, saying he doesn鈥檛 want to put the family through everything, but he already has.

鈥淲e鈥檙e missing our loved ones. He didn鈥檛 get arrested until [this year]. He got to spend Christmas and New Year鈥檚 with his loved ones.鈥
Brown, from Huntly, was Sowerby鈥檚 stepfather.
Asked what result they want in December, Marsters said, 鈥渁t least three life sentences鈥.

鈥淗e took three lives.
鈥淲hatever he gets, to me, is not enough.
鈥淭hree lives are irreplaceable, no matter what he gets. It ain鈥檛 gonna bring them back.鈥
Huirama-Osborne鈥榮 brother Wiremu Te Whare was also annoyed that the case had dragged on so long.
Asked if he felt any relief from the guilty pleas Te Whare said that won鈥檛 happen until they see Sowerby jailed.
鈥淭here will never be a sigh of relief, not until we know [how long he鈥檚 jailed for].鈥
Nusipepa鈥榮 partner, Natalia Taoho, also agreed that it should not have taken so long to plead guilty.
Taoho and Nusipepa had four children together, aged 7, 6, 5 and 3.
