The Mountain Safety Council has advised people to avoid backcountry skiing during high-risk periods after a video emerged of people being swept away by a rapidly moving avalanche.

Four people were swept away by an avalanche in W膩naka about 1-2km from the Treble Cone Ski Field area yesterday afternoon.

Dramatic footage shared on social media shows the group suddenly being swept away down the mountainside as the avalanche occurs.

Police said four people were accounted for and are safe following the avalanche.

All the group members reportedly emerged, with one person reported to have received minor injuries in relation to the incident.

Mike Daisley, chief executive of the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council, is urging people to 鈥渞econsider鈥 backcountry skiing amid a high-risk avalanche advisory for the W膩naka area.

Daisley said due to a significant spring snowfall followed by strong winds, the snowpack had become 鈥渜uite unstable鈥.

He said while the high-risk forecast covers a large area, there are places with a lot of snow that can be explored safely.

鈥淚t鈥檚 an important factor that you can still get out there and enjoy places,鈥 Daisley said.

鈥淭hat said, it鈥檚 very dangerous avalanche conditions that do exist; [the backcountry] is not a sensible place to be.

鈥淢aybe it鈥檚 a time to spend a little bit of time inbounds within the skifields.鈥

Daisley said the rare footage captured a very serious, potentially life-threatening avalanche.

鈥淚t鈥檚 always sort of 鈥榯he heart-in-the-mouth鈥 sort of thing when you see this,鈥 Daisley said.

鈥淵ou can imagine the thoughts going through the people鈥檚 minds that were filming it, because they were quite a distance away, knowing they couldn鈥檛 really do much about it.鈥

Daisley emphasised the importance of reviewing the avalanche advisory forecast beforehand.

鈥淎valanches themselves can do a lot of damage to people, particularly when they stop and if you鈥檙e trapped below them.

鈥淯nderneath the avalanches is obviously a very rocky mountain 鈥 both those things do a lot of damage.鈥

The person who posted the video to Instagram said they had a 鈥渟inking feeling鈥 that the group of ski tourers he captured were standing on unsafe ground.

鈥淚 was taking a reference video to send to a friend so they could properly describe the location to police, as I had a sinking feeling about where they were standing and what was likely about to happen,鈥 the poster said on Instagram.

Treble Cone Ski Field area said the avalanche occurred in the backcountry.

Its avalanche response team was on standby but was not required.
