  • Police Minister Mark Mitchell condemned boy racers as 鈥渃owardly, try-hard idiots鈥 after chaotic events in Levin and Palmerston North.
  • Police are preparing for more gatherings, emphasising a zero-tolerance approach to dangerous behaviour.
  • Ten arrests were made, with police and councils commending the strong response to the unlawful gatherings.

The Police Minister has labelled the boy racers involved in last night鈥檚 destructive events 鈥渃owardly, try-hard idiots鈥 as authorities brace for a another 鈥渋nvasion鈥 tonight in Tauranga.

More boy-racer meetings are set to kick off, after a chaotic meeting around Levin and Palmerston North last night.

Riot police clashed with up to 1000 attendees. Several people were injured and one young woman was badly hurt when her legs were run over.

Police said they are aware of a number of 鈥渁nti-social road user gatherings鈥 expected to take place across the country this weekend, including an 鈥渋nvasion鈥 in Tauranga.

However, an attendee at last night鈥檚 meeting says it鈥檚 not fair to brand all boy racing enthusiasts as troublemakers. Most just turn up to watch burnouts, 鈥渃ause that鈥檚 what we love鈥.

In a post on X, Police Minister Mark Mitchell said, 鈥淭he reckless, violent, and utterly disrespectful behaviour from boy racers will continue to be met with a zero tolerance approach by this Govt and police.

鈥淭hese cowardly, try-hard idiots are an embarrassment and danger to the communities they live in鈥.

He said last night鈥檚 events were a stark example of this 鈥 with innocent members of the public and two police officers injured 鈥渁s a direct result of their stupid and dangerous actions鈥.

Tauranga Mayor Mah茅 Drysdale told the Herald he was aware of an event planned in Tauranga tonight.

鈥淢y plea to those organising is, don鈥檛, you know, just stay away.

鈥淲e saw what happened last night in Levin, and you know it鈥檚 not a good thing for the community, to have people getting injured is unacceptable.鈥

Drysdale said he was in communication with police ahead of the Tauranga 鈥渋nvasion鈥 and understood they were ready to respond.

鈥淚 think it鈥檚 disappointing that this is likely to take place and affect a significant amount of the people in our community.

鈥淚鈥檓 very supportive of the police taking very strong and firm action to ensure the safety of our community.鈥

Police said the planned activities carried huge risk for those taking part or observing and are 鈥漜oncerning and distressing to members of the public鈥.

Police had plans in place to help ensure safety, and they would not tolerate behaviour that endangered others and caused damage to roads and property.

Police were set to respond appropriately to hold people to account for any offence.

鈥榃hat the f*** are they doing down there?鈥 鈥 seven injured, 10 arrested in chaotic night

Seven people, including two police officers, were injured after the boy-racer meeting around Levin and Palmerston North last night.

Five bystanders were hit by cars, including one young woman whose legs were run over.

One group poured diesel across a street intersection in Palmerston North and set it alight, as one stunned bystander filmed the street on fire next to a Mobil petrol station.

鈥淲hat the f*** are they doing down there?鈥 can be heard in a video circulating of the incident.

鈥淭he gatherings involved a large convoy of vehicles and over 1000 individuals, which followed similar illegal activity in Levin last year that saw State Highway 1 barricaded and weapons reportedly present,鈥 a combined local council statement said.

An attendee at last night鈥檚 Levin event, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Herald the event appeared to be 鈥渇ine at first鈥 but quickly escalated.

They said when police showed up, 鈥淭here were loud shots of rubber pellets being shot and loud bangs followed by flashes鈥 as the situation deteriorated.

The witness said they parked down the road from the event and noticed the 鈥減olice weren鈥檛 playing nice鈥.

They claimed an officer pepper-sprayed a man trying to hop over a barrier, and hit another person with a baton.

The witness that while there were some troublemakers, most attendees said they just wanted to see some burnouts, 鈥渃ause that鈥檚 what we love. We weren鈥檛 there to cause any trouble鈥.

Local councils condemn overnight 鈥榠nvasions鈥

In a joint statement, Horowhenua District Council and Palmerston North City Council thanked police and emergency services for their 鈥渟trong, co-ordinated response to unlawful gatherings in the region overnight鈥.

They said 10 arrests had been made so far, with more to come as police investigated footage from the event.

Police had acted early and deployed teams including riot police, armed offenders squad officers and the Eagle helicopter.

Horowhenua Mayor Bernie Wanden said the behaviour witnessed last night was disgraceful.

鈥淭his activity isn鈥檛 just reckless 鈥 it鈥檚 dangerous. People have been hurt.

鈥淢ost of the individuals involved are not from Horowhenua, yet it鈥檚 our community that bears the burden.鈥

Palmerston North Mayor Grant Smith said street racing was completely unacceptable.

鈥淲hile those involved may think it鈥檚 just a bit of fun, it is intimidating behaviour for communities.

鈥淚n past events, these incidents have also passed on large costs to ratepayers to repair damaged roads and clean up broken glass and car parts.鈥

Both councils said the boy racers were 鈥渘ot welcome鈥 in their communities.
