鈥淲ill they come for me next?鈥 a 10-year-old girl asked her family after her father Dayne Rademarkers was stabbed to death as he lay sleeping in a garage.
鈥淏ecause someone killed my dad, will they want to kill me?鈥
Rademakers was murdered by Manukura McLeod, the ex-partner of a woman he鈥檇 been seeing who was apparently jealous of her new lover.
After being stood up for a late-night meeting with that woman, McLeod walked to an address where she was sleeping on a fold-out camp bed with Rademakers. He entered the house, armed himself with a knife and stabbed him three times through a blanket, then fled the scene.
Rademakers died from his wounds shortly after arriving at hospital.
A jury found McLeod guilty of murder at a trial held earlier this year.
Today at the High Court at Palmerston North he was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum no-parole period of 17 years.
McLeod sat impassively throughout this morning鈥檚 sentencing, where Rademakers鈥 family members read their victim impact statements.
鈥淟ook at me,鈥 Rademakers鈥 sister Whitney Rademakers said to McLeod, which he did.
鈥淚 hate you for what you did,鈥 she said.

鈥淵ou didn鈥檛 just kill my brother, you stole a piece of me ... he was my twin, my other half.鈥
鈥淲e shared everything, even a heartbeat. A heartbeat that you took.鈥
Whitney told the court that McLeod had not just destroyed one life, but their entire family.
鈥淚 watched you during the trial and I searched for a flicker of humanity, or guilt or remorse 鈥 there was nothing,鈥 she said.
鈥淛ust a blank stare, like none of this mattered.鈥
A victim impact statement was also read on behalf of Rademakers鈥 now 12-year-old daughter.
鈥淚 will think about you every day, you will always be my daddy ... you will always be in my heart,鈥 an excerpt from a letter the girl had written to her father and was placed in his coffin, read.
Family speaking on behalf of the girl said Rademakers would not be there for all his daughter鈥檚 important milestones.
鈥淎t each milestone in her life, she will revisit her loss and revisit her trauma. At each parole hearing she will revisit her trauma and revisit this fight,鈥 they said in a statement.
鈥淣ot only has Dayne鈥檚 life been cut short, but it has forever altered the life of his daughter.鈥
The family said that they鈥檇 had to answer difficult questions from the girl about how and why her father had been murdered, and she was afraid that she would be targeted next.
鈥淭o her, she doesn鈥檛 understand, as it鈥檚 not her fault her dad was so handsome.
鈥淪he wishes that man who took her dad from her goes to jail for the rest of his life.鈥
鈥極vercome with jealousy鈥
Crown Prosecutor Guy Carter sought a minimum non-parole period of 17 years for McLeod.
鈥淚t鈥檚 the how that stands out,鈥 he said, 鈥溾he fact that he was asleep in the middle of the night鈥here is nothing that could be levelled at him in terms of blame.鈥

McLeod鈥檚 lawyer, Paul Surridge, said he had no previous convictions for violence, and was on good terms with his former partners despite having led a hard life.
Justice Paul Radich said McLeod had evidently been 鈥渙vercome with jealousy鈥 upon seeing Rademakers and Chapman in bed together.
鈥淵ou attacked a vulnerable sleeping man,鈥 Justice Radich said, 鈥淵ou have not accepted responsibility for what happened.鈥
鈥淲hen a person is asleep, they鈥檙e just as vulnerable as someone who is very young, old, or disabled.鈥
Justice Radich said while he acknowledged McLeod had a history of substance abuse and a difficult upbringing, he didn鈥檛 consider those mitigating factors that could warrant a discount.
鈥淚 hope that you can, with time, come to acknowledge what you did and embrace change.鈥
