A dream holiday for a group of Kiwi friends turned sour after they arrived at what they thought was their booked accommodation, only to find they had been scammed.
Social content creator and popular TikTok influencer Georgia Pemberton took to the social media site to share how she and her nine friends were duped by a fake Bookabach listing.
The friends paid a total of A$10,000 ($11,570) to spend eight days at a Gold Coast property, in Australia, she found on the Bookabach website.
鈥淭he photos looked great,鈥 Pemberton says of the property.
鈥淚 knock on the door ... and this girl comes out. And she鈥檚 like: 鈥楬i, can I help you鈥? I said: 鈥榊eah, we鈥檝e booked this place on Bookabach.
鈥淎nd she goes: 鈥業 don鈥檛 do Bookabach. What do you mean?鈥
鈥淲hen I tell you, my heart literally sank to my arse. What do you mean you don鈥檛 do Bookabach? Who did I just pay $10,000 to?鈥
Pemberton said the woman was the same woman pictured in photographs connected to the property on Bookabach.
The property owner guessed that whoever made the fake listing had taken photos of her home from an old real estate listing.
They had also seemingly taken personal photos of her available online.
鈥淭he girl [who] came out was the same girl that was the host in the Bookabach pictures, so this scammer has taken photos of the woman from her WhatsApp and has pretended to be her.鈥

With nowhere to go, the group found themselves at a local park trying to figure out where they would spend the night.
One of their party managed to get through to someone at Bookabach and they were granted a few nights鈥 free stay at a hotel.
They were then able to book accommodation at a different property with Airbnb.
A spokesman for Bookabach鈥檚 parent company, Expedia Group, told 九一星空无限.com.au that they were actively investigating the matter.
鈥楳oral of the story - be careful鈥
They also acknowledged that the fake listing on their website had been removed and people were no longer able to make bookings for that property.
鈥淲e sincerely apologise for Ms Pemberton鈥檚 experience and want to assure you that we take any claims of fraudulent use of our platform very seriously.鈥
Pemberton warned others who may look to book accommodation through websites such as Bookabach of the potential risks.
鈥淓verything happens for a reason. I think the moral of the story is: Be careful.
鈥淚 genuinely felt sick to my stomach, thinking that someone has just taken $10,000 and luckily.鈥
She said she was lucky in that she was with people who were calm and she was grateful they were all safe and okay.
鈥淏ut I just feel like something could鈥檝e gone really bad. I鈥檓 never on booking accommodation [duty] again.鈥
