A lack of funding and sponsorship and looming Brynderwyns closures have caused the 鈥済utting鈥 cancellation of the popular Kerikeri Street Party.
Event organiser Jackie Sanders said her company Jacman Entertainment had been taking 鈥渇ull financial risk鈥 for the event for the last five years, and this time the required funding didn鈥檛 come through.
A call by New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) to close the Brynderwyns over two long weekends, one of which coincided with the street party and Kerikeri Half Marathon on November 22, was 鈥渢he final nail in the coffin鈥, Sanders said.
鈥淔unding and sponsorship were too difficult to source this year,鈥 she said.
鈥淏arfoot & Thompson were still there, and they were right behind us this year, but it can鈥檛 be just their sponsorship; we need funding as well.
鈥淲e just had to make a call.鈥
Held every November on the evening after the Kerikeri Half Marathon, the much-loved annual street party started in 2007 to encourage out-of-town runners to stay an extra night in town.
The event regularly attracted more than 4000 revellers who enjoyed live music, street performers and dozens of stalls offering food, craft beers and wine.
Sanders stressed that the cancellation wasn鈥檛 permanent, and the street party may return next year if funding was available.
鈥淲e鈥檝e been entirely clear, this isn鈥檛 permanent.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a fantastic event; we just can鈥檛 afford to do it this year.
鈥淚t鈥檚 just one of those years the stars didn鈥檛 align for us.鈥
The event attracted around 4000 revellers who partied on Kerikeri鈥檚 main street after the half marathon.
KKDBA said it was 鈥渂eyond gutted鈥 to learn of the cancellation with less than six weeks鈥 notice.
KKDBA executive member Ann Court said it was 鈥渁nother kick in the face鈥 for local businesses already impacted by a faltering economy and SH1 diversions.
NZTA recently confirmed SH1 over the Brynderwyn Hills will close for two, four-day 鈥渟uper weekends鈥 in November while resurfacing works are carried out.
The vital transport link will be shut in both directions from November 13 to 16 and again from November 20 to 23, with detours along Paparoa-Oakleigh Rd, Cove Rd via Mangawhai and Waipu, and SH12/SH14.
鈥淚t鈥檚 hard to overstate quite how important these events are for our local economy,鈥 Court said.
鈥淢any people travel specifically to Kerikeri and the wider Bay of Islands area to participate in both the half-marathon and the street party.
鈥淟osing 50% of the reason for visiting will doubtless disappoint many and ... will make it more difficult to bring them north again next year.鈥
Court said the lack of notice would 鈥渟harpen the disappointment鈥 among visitors and locals alike.
Sport Northland doesn鈥檛 believe the Brynderwyns closures or Kerikeri Street Party cancellation will deter runners from this year鈥檚 Kerikeri Half Marathon.
鈥淕iven the importance of this event to the local economy, we would have thought that the organiser would have given others a chance to step forward and make it happen.
鈥淏ut now, with less than a month to find the funding and put all the arrangements in place, that would be next to impossible.鈥
Sport Northland, which runs the Kerikeri Half Marathon, said they鈥檇 had 鈥渞eally clear comms鈥 with NZTA about the road closures.
Event lead Tara Wilson said last year the event attracted more than 1900 runners and walkers.
鈥淲e鈥檙e definitely on track for around the same numbers as last year.
鈥淲e鈥檙e communicating to our participants this week and putting up our signs in regards to the road closure, that they鈥檒l need to allow a bit of extra time for travel.
鈥淲e don鈥檛 think it鈥檒l affect us too much.鈥
Wilson said she didn鈥檛 think the street party cancellation would deter anyone either.
鈥淭here鈥檚 still heaps of cool stuff to do up here.鈥
Court said KKDBA is considering how it might help rescue the street party for future years.
The signature event 鈥渄emands consistency and certainty鈥, she said.
鈥淲e will certainly be thinking about how we might ... get this much-loved event back onto the calendar for next year and beyond.鈥
