
The death of a prisoner at Hawke鈥檚 Bay Regional Prison on Sunday is being treated as unexplained by police.
Police were made aware around 12.45pm on Sunday of a man who had died at the prison 鈥渇ollowing an incident鈥.
In a statement, Detective Inspector Martin James said an investigation into the death was under way.
Acting general manager at the prison Shannin Mortensen said prison staff made every effort to save the man, but were unable to revive him.
Mortensen said the man was found in his cell and he was not double-bunked.
The matter has been referred to police, who have contacted the man鈥檚 next of kin.
鈥淥ur thoughts are with those impacted,鈥 he said.
鈥淥ther men in the unit and staff are being provided with support, including access to chaplains and cultural support where requested.鈥
All deaths in prison are subject to an internal incident review, investigation by the independent Corrections Inspectorate, and are also referred to the coroner, Mortensen said.
鈥淭he Inspectorate and coroner both complete a robust independent assessment of each incident providing commentary and recommendations regarding the care and treatment of deceased individuals,鈥 he said.
鈥淚n addition, the coroner confirms the cause of death.鈥
