A dozen fire trucks and 50 firefighters are battling a blaze in a government building in Auckland this morning.

Grey smoke is billowing over the Auckland suburb of Glen Innes after fire broke out in the Ministry of Social Development offices.

The blaze erupted inside the Mayfair Pl building just after 7am.

A police spokesperson said motorists should expect delays in Glen Innes due to the fire.

Mayfair Pl is cordoned off and Taniwha St and Apirana Ave are currently closed, although motorists can still use the roundabout.

鈥淭he fire is contained and there are no reports of injury,鈥 the police spokesperson said.

Incident Controller Shane Munro says the Work and Income New Zealand building is single-level and has multiple tenants.

Just after 8.30am, Munro said 15 fire trucks were on the scene battling the fire.

He said the fire had been contained to the building but had not been extinguished.

Glen Innes Lotto & Dairy owner Kanti Patel said he could see 鈥渁 lot of grey smoke鈥 billowing from the MSD building in the middle of the shopping centre.

鈥淚 can see the smoke, two fire engines here.鈥

Police have cordoned off the carpark to the shopping centre and asked that workers close the doors to their shops.

Fire and Emergency said it was alerted to a fire at Mayfair Place in Glen Innes, Auckland at approximately 7am.

A spokesperson said twelve trucks with almost 50 firefighters have been sent to the incident.

鈥淲e recommend avoiding the area, and if people are concerned by the smoke, please close the doors and windows.鈥

Last Friday, police and Fire and Emergency NZ attended a fire nearby on Taniwha St. Multiple apartments in a single-storey block of units were affected.

Another witness, on his way to work, said there was a lot of 鈥渂lack and grey smoke鈥 coming from one building.

鈥淭here鈥檚 smoke right over to the train station.

鈥淭here鈥檚 a smell of a kind of burnt plastic around the place.鈥

He said there were about six fire trucks on the scene and traffic was 鈥渢errible鈥 in the area.

There were three ambulances and a large police response.

The police were preventing people from coming close to the area.

Gemmells Tyrepower manager Steven said he could see half a dozen fire engines and three to four police vehicles at the scene.

鈥淲hen I arrived at work, I saw the smoke, it was probably about 7.10am.

鈥淚t was well up in smoke by then.鈥

He didn鈥檛 think anyone had been evacuated from the MSD building.

A St John spokesperson said they were called to the scene of the fire but their assistance was not required.
