Fireworks were again shot at police on Dunedin鈥檚 notorious Castle St last night, resulting in three Guy Fawkes arrests.
Sergeant Matt Lee said police responded to multiple reports of disorder on the student party street 鈥渨ith fireworks being let off and people drinking in the street鈥.
鈥淧olice attended, and unfortunately, some attendees decided to aim fireworks at officers, which is reckless and dangerous. Thankfully, no one was injured.鈥
Despite multiple warnings, some of the around 80 people on the street continued to shoot fireworks at police staff, said Lee.
Three males were arrested for disorderly behaviour and transported to the Dunedin Custody Unit.
All received a formal warning, but two 鈥渨ill be receiving infringement notices for discharging fireworks in a public place鈥.
One witness described last night as 鈥渁 warzone for a bit鈥 with fireworks constantly going off.
He said people were standing on flat roofs, shooting fireworks at people being chased by police.
Multiple couches burned and people threw fireworks in the flames, causing explosions.
The antics went on past midnight.
It follows fireworks being aimed at police officers on Sunday night after emergency services responded to reports of a large group setting off fireworks on Castle St about 9.30pm.
Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond said witnesses reported about 50 people shooting fireworks at each other.
鈥淲hen officers arrived, they verbally warned everyone involved,鈥 Bond said.
A 20-year-old man was arrested for being disorderly and released with a verbal warning.
However, as officers were returning to their patrol vehicle, a group of males deliberately shot fireworks in their direction, narrowly missing the officers.
鈥淎s a result of that reckless behaviour, another 20-year-old was held in custody overnight and released this morning with a warning,鈥 Bond said.
鈥淔ireworks are explosives and can cause serious injuries, which is why the sale timeframe for them continues to be reduced each year.
鈥淪hooting fireworks at people or property is a dangerous decision that could have lifelong consequences. We want people to enjoy themselves safely, but we will take action if anyone is putting themselves or others at risk.鈥
Bond said police continued to urge the public to use fireworks responsibly.
