A grief-stricken Napier family is returning home to farewell 11-year-old son and brother Mateo Deveraturda, who died after a fortnight-long fight for his life against symptoms that started as a 鈥渞outine flu鈥.
In a social media post, the family said it was 鈥渁 very hard time as we grieve the loss of our boy Mateo鈥.
They asked for time and privacy to navigate the coming days.
They said the St Patrick鈥檚 School pupil would be returning to Napier on Thursday and family would share details about further arrangements as they were available.
鈥淲e sincerely thank you for your support and prayers during this difficult time,鈥 they said. 鈥淲e appreciate your understanding and respect for our wishes.鈥
Mateo had been taken to a doctor amid the deterioration of his condition, and after being transferred to Hawke鈥檚 Bay Hospital, was flown to Auckland鈥檚 Starship Children鈥檚 Hospital as his condition became critical.
Family had been at his side throughout, and communicated with the school and its community amid the prayers for the boy鈥檚 improvement, including one written by his classmates posted by the school on social media on Tuesday, but he passed away on Wednesday morning.
