An 18-year-old man has been arrested in Dunedin in relation to a bomb threat aimed at a Wellington mosque.
Police said the threat was made against the Kilbirnie Masjid on Thursday.
鈥淎n 18-year-old man has been arrested and taken into custody in Dunedin this evening (Saturday), in relation to a threat towards a place of worship in the Wellington area,鈥 a police spokesperson said this morning.
鈥淗e is assisting Police with enquiries. Charges are yet to be confirmed.鈥
The mosque had suspended all activities while the threat was investigated.
A note from the Wellington Islamic Centre said the threat was made online and 鈥渟pecified the exact address of the Kilbirnie Masjid鈥.
鈥淧olice have the situation well in control and are now actively tracking and tracing the source of the threat.
鈥淎ll the other mosques and Islamic centres in Wellington have been advised of the threat.鈥
The Federation of the Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ) advocacy chairman Abdur Razzaq told the Herald the mosque regularly receives threats.
鈥淭his type of threat has happened before. In each case, the Police has taken them very seriously.鈥
He sent a further note out following confirmation of the arrest.
鈥淲e thank the Police team for the excellent work to bring this sad saga to a close within such a short time. Our appreciation also for the Police national coordination and liaison for keeping us informed at all stages.
鈥淎s a consequence of this arrest, the normal activities of the Wellington Islamic Centre (Kilbirnie Masjid) shall resume.鈥
Inspector Ren茅e Perkins, Acting Wellington District Commander yesterday said: 鈥淥n 23 October, Police received a report of a threat towards a place of worship in the Wellington area.
鈥淎n investigation is under way, however we want to reassure the community that at this stage there is no immediate known threat.
鈥淧olice are speaking with community representatives and keeping them updated while the investigation continues.
鈥淲hile the investigation is ongoing, Police are conducting reassurance patrols in the area.鈥
