  • Chris Bishop admitted to making an offensive comment during Stan Walker鈥檚 performance at the Aotearoa Music Awards.
  • David Seymour defended Bishop, stating he is usually moderate and suggesting some might agree with his opinion.
  • Seymour emphasised the importance of expressing views on art, saying it shouldn鈥檛 overshadow his new role as Deputy Prime Minister.

The new Deputy Prime Minister David Seymour has waded in on an offensive 鈥榗rap鈥 comment by Cabinet Minister Chris Bishop at Thursday night鈥檚 Aotearoa Music Awards in Auckland.

Bishop yesterday admitted he should have kept his comments to himself after saying 鈥渨hat a load of crap鈥 during a performance by Stan Walker.

In a statement to RNZ, Bishop confirmed saying something about performative acclaim and that he said, 鈥渨hat a load of crap鈥. He claimed it referred to what he called the overtly political branding on display.

Speaking today after being sworn in as the nation鈥檚 Deputy Prime Minister, Seymour said, 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 see the Stan Walker performance, so I can鈥檛 really judge, but I鈥檝e known Chris Bishop for 10 years.

鈥淗e鈥檚 a pretty moderate sort of guy on most things.

鈥淪o my first inclination is maybe he鈥檚 right.

Seymour added, 鈥淲ithout knowing anything more about it, some performances aren鈥檛 that great, and sometimes you鈥檝e got to express yourself.鈥

He said that he hadn鈥檛 seen the performance but thought a lot of other people may agree with Bishop鈥檚 opinion.

When asked whether Bishop may have been tired or emotional at the time when he made the comment, Seymour said it wasn鈥檛 the case.

鈥淣o, I mean, Chris is one of the hardest-working people I know.

鈥淗e鈥檚 got one young boy and another young girl who鈥檚 come along very recently.

鈥淪o he puts in huge hours, but I wouldn鈥檛 put any innuendo around that.鈥

Seymour said the comment made by Bishop did not overshadow his own appointment today as the new Deputy Prime Minister.

鈥淚 suspect that there鈥檒l be people who think that Bishop was absolutely right, people who think he was wrong, people who don鈥檛 care.鈥

鈥淲e shouldn鈥檛 be so concerned about people expressing a view.鈥

Seymour said people expressed all sorts of views about art.

鈥淭here are people who make all sorts of outlandish statements, and you know, anytime that people want to start reporting all of them with equal judgment and critique, I鈥檒l be right there. I might even subscribe.鈥

Renowned musician Don McGlashan was seen on a video of the incident confronting Bishop, but McGlashan said he did not realise at first that it was the minister.

鈥淚 could hear an enormous amount of ranting, kind of against the whole thing. I didn鈥檛 get the full gist of it, but it was basically - 鈥榯he h墨koi is ages ago, sit down everybody鈥 - so this geezer was just ranting away and telling everybody to sit down,鈥 McGlashan told RNZ.

鈥淎fter a while I turned to him and said, 鈥楢h, shut up you dickhead鈥 and I looked at him and I thought, 鈥極h, I know that face鈥. Then he said, 鈥榃hat did you say to me?鈥欌.

McGlashan said that he again told Bishop to, 鈥淪hut up you dickhead鈥, and he said, 鈥業 could say the same to you,鈥 and I said, 鈥榃ell, I wasn鈥檛 talking and you were鈥. And then I realised I was talking to the leader of the House.鈥

Stan Walker has been approached for comment.
