Irish pub Danny Doolans has condemned the actions of one of its musicians after he struck a female football player in the head with his drumstick.

A video obtained by the Herald shows the incident at the popular venue on Auckland鈥檚 viaduct occurred on July 13, around midnight.

The victim was on a night out with teammates, celebrating a win in Auckland鈥檚 top football league.

The player 鈥 who wished to remain anonymous 鈥 told the Herald: 鈥淸He] whacked me full force.鈥

鈥淗e literally gets up off his chair and whacks me overhead on the forehead.鈥

A photo taken later that night by a teammate shows a large lump and bruise had developed on the player鈥檚 forehead.

The 22-year-old admitted that she may have provoked the incident at the Good Spirits Hospitality-owned bar.

She said she had been tapping on the drummer鈥檚 kit at the break and during a live performance and was asked to stop doing so. It was soon after that that the musician reacted by striking her with a drumstick.

鈥淚 put my hands up, and there was a break in the music, so I was just playing on the drums, just with my hands.

鈥淢e, and one of the other girls, we both did it, and it was funny in the moment 鈥 I just didn鈥檛 really think.

鈥淚 hit them one more time with my hand ... Then he just whacked me.

鈥淚 just didn鈥檛 believe it ... Even if I pushed a whole drum set over, he still can鈥檛 be hitting me like that.鈥

Good Spirits Hospitality operations manager Jaime Dutton told the Herald: "I can confirm the incident happened and we have replied to the customer involved.

鈥淚t is never acceptable for anyone, staff or patron, to strike another under any circumstance.

鈥淚t is very unfortunate that this happened; we hope to see the patron back at Danny鈥檚 soon,鈥 Dutton said.

The woman acknowledged that she should not have touched the equipment during the performance 鈥 particularly while intoxicated 鈥 but she was distressed by the physical response from the drummer.

鈥淲hen it happened, I just went outside, because I was really upset, because my head hurt.

鈥淢ost of my friends didn鈥檛 really see how hard it was. They just thought [the drummer] touched my head 鈥 they didn鈥檛 understand that he whacked me.

鈥淭hen the next morning, when we realised that one of us had the video, everyone was like 鈥榓s if that happened鈥.鈥

The player said that the following day, she emailed the bar about the incident and attached the video.

Danny Doolans allegedly responded to the player: 鈥淔or transparency, we are aware of some tensions during the evening, including interference with band equipment prior to the incident. That being said, this does not excuse what happened, and we are addressing the situation from all sides to ensure it鈥檚 handled appropriately and doesn鈥檛 happen again.鈥

She told the Herald she hasn鈥檛 heard from Danny Doolans since those communications ended on Tuesday, July 15.

While relieved the whack didn鈥檛 lead to any major injury 鈥 and she was back on the football pitch soon after 鈥 she鈥檚 worried for future patrons.

鈥淢y main thing with this is just that it doesn鈥檛 happen again. There鈥檚 clearly something wrong if he thinks that鈥檚 acceptable to act like that.鈥
